Virgil van Dijk to PSG transfer update emerges as Liverpool’s stance clear

Liverpool is still focused on trying to agree a new contract with Virgil van Dijk, with a move to Paris Saint-Germain having been played down.

Van Dijk’s future remains up in the air with just a couple months of the season remaining. The Reds captain, like Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is set to see his contract expire in the summer, and he is currently able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club should he wish to do so.

The defender admitted after Liverpool’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of PSG that he still has “no idea” what the future holds for him, although his actions immediately after the second leg at Anfield wouldn’t have given fans much hope.

Van Dijk was spotted in conversation with several PSG bosses in the tunnel at Anfield, sparking speculation that he could be eyeing up a move to the French capital. That escalated when reports after the game emerged that the Ligue 1 champions had made a bid for him.

That claim has since been denied in France, and has now been backed up by The Athletic’s David Ornstein. Answering a question about a potential move to PSG for Van Dijk during a Q&A, Ornstein insisted that “all parties” are playing down the suggestion, while Liverpool remains confident he will sign a new contract at Anfield.

That will come as welcome news to Reds fans, especially with so little time remaining now before the end of the season. Although Van Dijk insists he’s no closer to signing a new deal at Liverpool, he did issue a strong response as speculation continues over his future.

“I have no idea at the moment,” Van Dijk said last week. “There is nothing on hold. I don’t even know myself. I keep saying the same thing.

“If there is news, you guys will know it but I don’t even know it myself. Everyone knows there is some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it. I don’t know what will happen next year so if anyone says they do, they are lying to you!”

Liverpool.com says: Well, it’s encouraging that there doesn’t seem to be any movement from PSG, but you still can’t help but feel nervous about Van Dijk’s future, given how close the end of the season is now. Hopefully things pick up soon and we get a resolution before the end of May, otherwise Liverpool will be setting itself up for a very difficult summer.
