The young Moroccan talent will get a chance to prove himself in the Bayern first team.
Bayern Munich usually brings a group of young players to the senior team’s pre-season tour and gives them a chance to prove their quality. This strategy has proved fruitful on numerous occasions, as Josip Stanišić emerged from the 2021 pre-season with enough credit to play a credible role in the first team while Aleksandar Pavlović and Frans Krätzig did the same in the 2023 preseason. And it seemed that Adam Aznou would be the “winner” of the 2024 pre-season, emerging to play regular minutes with the senior team in its’ various friendlies.
Unfortunately, that did not end up happening. The youngster made his debut for the Moroccan national team and for Bayern’s senior team, but while he has managed to rack up several more minutes for his national side, he could not win any more in Munich. This saw Aznou leave the club in a rather dramatic exit, as it was reported that the former FC Barcelona youngster was furious with the club before eventually leaving on loan to La Liga team Real Valladolid.
There, Aznou racked up a lot of minutes in a top flight division (including a direct duel against his close friend Lamine Yamal) as Bayern’s left backs Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Itō suffered long term injuries. As Aznou’s loan ends in the summer and the recovery process for Itō and Davies does not, it has been heavily speculated that Bayern plan to bring him along for the summer FIFA Club World Cup.
This speculation has now been confirmed: “Alphonso Davies is still out for a while. So we’re planning for Adam to go to the Club World Cup,” sporting director Christoph Freund said in an interview with Abendzeitung and t-Online, via @iMiaSanMia. “It’s been an important six months for Adam; he’s played a lot of games, including against Barcelona at the weekend. He’s gained experience at a high level. So, that was exactly what we wanted for Adam: for him to come back at a different level.”
That is exactly what he will do. It is easy to tell that his game has matured and grown over the last months. But how much? And will it be enough to break through at Bayern? Does Aznou still want to do so? Perhaps, at the end of the day, if Aznou could not come out of last summer’s pre-season as a true winner, perhaps this summer offers him a second chance to showcase his skills and tell the coaching staff that he can be an important member of the first team.
