This is not good…
Things are escalating quickly regarding the fallout from the injury that Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies suffered while paying for the Canadian national team.
Per Canadian outlet Sportsnet (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Davies had already suffered an injury in the previous game against Mexico before tearing his ACL against the USMNT:
Alphonso Davies had already suffered a minor injury in Canada’s semifinal loss to Mexico, but was deemed fit enough to start against the U.S in the third place match.
It should be noted that there is not necessarily a correlation between the two injuries, though it cannot be ruled out that the first injury affected or impacted the second injury at this point based on the information available. Information on the extent of the first injury has not been released.
Speaking to Tz journalist Philipp Kessler (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the agent for Davies, Nedal Huoseh, was extremely angry with how Davies’ situation was managed by Canadian officials.
“He shouldn’t have played in the USA friendly 3rd place match. I was surprised that he started because he had communicated he wasn’t good to start. A source within CSA [Canada FA] told me Friday night Alphonso wouldn’t start but might get a few minutes. I told them he shouldn’t play at all,” Huoseh said. “In my opinion (Canada coach Jesse Marsch) should have managed the situation better, this could have been 100% preventable. Prior to Canada, Jesse has coached professionally at the highest level and should know very well not to take risks with players when they tell you they can’t play. The national team shouldn’t make emotional decisions based on individual success. I know it was a match against the USA and there was a lot of motivation to win but players health should come first.
“National teams need to do a better job protecting the players. I know he’s in good hands with Bayern’s medical team and will recover from the setback. I spoke with (Davies), and of course he’s anything but happy with the situation. He wanted to be available for FC Bayern in the coming decisive weeks.”
Finally, Tz journalists Mano Bonke and Kessler (via @iMiaSanMia) checked back into say that Davies has already undergone surgery:
Alphonso Davies has already undergone successful surgery by knee specialist Christian Fink in Innsbruck, the same doctor who did the surgeries for the likes of Leroy Sané and Lucas Hernández in the past.
