Jamie Carragher on ‘difficult thing’ facing Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has revealed that Steven Gerrard decided against leaving Liverpool after being fully aware of the reaction from the club and supporters.

Gerrard was not keen to leave the city should he have departed for West London and his plan was to keep living on Mereyside.

The midfielder’s connections to Liverpool meant that he was fully aware of the reaction to him potentially leaving and now, Alexander-Arnold will now be going through the same as he prepares to join Madrid.

When asked about whether it will be tough for Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave his boyhood club, Carragher told Sky Sports: “It won’t be easy, I remember Steven Gerrard going through something similar when Chelsea were desperate to sign him.

“It was more about how the club felt and the support because that is the big thing, when we keep talking about being a local lad is because your family are here, you’re probably going to live back here, I’m not sure if Trent will but you’ve got all your friends and family in the city – you know what the supporters are saying every day – that’s what makes it more difficult when you’re a local player.

“Stevie was always going to move back and live in Liverpool if he moved to Chelsea, so you think of things like that is where the difficult thing will be.”

Jamie Carragher says he would have rejected Real Madrid to stay at Liverpool

Carragher firmly revealed that he would have rejected a move to Real Madrid and remained at Liverpool had of been in Alexander-Arnold’s position.

“I’d have signed for Liverpool,” he bluntly replied, “I always thought that if you’re a local player and the team is doing well, it’s your job to try and make it more successful and when the team’s not doing so well, it’s your job to drag the team back up to where it needs to be.”
