Well, that came out of nowhere.
For most of the 2024/25 season, reports indicated that Eric Dier would not get a new contract at Bayern Munich. The 2024 January transfer window signing has proven to be a reliable back up and a popular member of the dressing room, but head coach Vincent Kompany clearly demonstrated throughout the season that he trusted the former Tottenham Hotspur player far less than the first choice center-back duo of Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae. So, Dier would not get a contract beyond 2025.
But all of a sudden, Dier seems on the verge of extending his stay at Bayern, via Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (and captured by @iMiaSanMia):
Eric Dier is expected to sign a new one-year deal at FC Bayern. The agreement could be finalised soon.
In recent weeks, Dier went from being rarely used to regularly filling in for Upamecano or Kim. Perhaps this increase in use has persuaded Bayern to change their minds. What would this potential renewal mean for the club’s search for a center back over the summer? Will the renewal eliminate the need or will Dier be slotted in as 4th choice center-back behind a new center-back signing? We’ll see…
