Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa will resume their fight for a Champions League place in the Premier League when they clash at the American Express Stadium on Wednesday night.
These two sides meet following an extremely contrasting experience in the FA Cup quarter-finals, as the Seagulls crashed out after a devastating penalty shootout defeat to Nottingham Forest, while the Villans breezed past Preston North End with a 3-0 win to book their date at Wembley in the semi-finals.
Brighton will look to bounce back from that loss as they aim to strengthen their top-four push, while the visitors could leapfrog their opponents in the standings if they take all three points.
Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.
Head-to-head record
Previous meetings: 34
Brighton wins: 6
Draws: 10
Aston Villa wins: 18
Aston Villa have been the dominant force in this fixture in recent meetings, winning six and losing only two of their last 11 meetings with Brighton in the Premier League.
Despite that, the Villans have failed to defeat the Seagulls in either of their last two clashes – losing 1-0 at the end of last season and drawing 2-2 earlier this term – though they had won all of the proceeding five encounters, including a 6-1 demolition in September 2023.
Their latest game, the aforementioned 2-2 draw at Villa Park in December, saw both sides tussle for control of the match, with Brighton initially leading before having to come from 2-1 behind to draw level, thanks to Tariq Lamptey‘s 81st-minute equaliser.
Ollie Watkins scored Aston Villa’s first goal in that match, and the striker has thrived against Brighton, netting seven goals and providing two assists in eight league meetings, including a hat-trick in the 6-1 victory.
Unbelievably, Watkins has scored as many goals in this fixture as Brighton have in the last nine encounters, while the Seagulls have also only managed to net more than once in just two of their 11 Premier League meetings with the Villans.
Unai Emery also has a favourable record against the Seagulls throughout his career, with three wins, three draws and only one defeat in his seven matches against Brighton.
The Spaniard will now be looking to add Fabian Hurzeler‘s scalp to his collection of defeated Brighton managers, as the German’s only meeting with Emery came in the 2-2 draw earlier this campaign.
