Report: Arsenal have ‘reservations’ about signing one of Mikel Arteta’s striker targets this summer

There’s no doubt that Arsenal will be aiming to go big on a new number nine this summer, one of Andrea Berta’s first tasks in office.

Mikel Arteta has only signed two strikers since he arrived at Arsenal in 2019 and they are the club’s current incumbents: Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Even with both fit, Arsenal fans have been calling for a ‘proper’ number nine to arrive at the Emirates Stadium – someone who can score 20 goals a season.

Both Havertz and Jesus have their qualities, as they’ve displayed this season before their respective injuries, but neither are prolific in front of goal.

Arsenal are looking at several strikers right now, and one of those is RB Leipzig hitman Benjamin Sesko.

Arsenal have concerns about signing Benjamin Sesko

That being said, The Athletic are reporting that Arsenal actually have some ‘reservations’ about signing Sesko this summer.

Arsenal have dedicated a lot of time in pursuing Sesko already, a 21-year-old striker who’s scored 17 goals in 37 games for Leipzig this season.

However, the Gunners do have some concerns about the Slovenian’s readiness to make an immediate difference in the Premier League.

Although Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak remains first choice, Arteta wants to sign Sesko this summer.

Arsenal wanted Sesko last summer and made their move, but the youngster decided to sign a new contract with Leipzig to continue his progress in the Bundesliga.

But the Gunners’ transfer team have continued to follow the Slovenia international ever since, explaining why the club do have such a comprehensive understanding of this skill-set.

Arsenal seem determined to get things right in the transfer market this summer – hence the arrival for former Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta.

Arsenal chose Berta over Jason Ayto seemingly so they could use the Italian’s experience in Europe to execute some crucial deals.

Arsenal want to keep Ayto at the club nonetheless, but he is now attracting interest from Premier League rivals.

But either way, Arsenal are set for a big summer of spending by all accounts – recruiting a striker won’t be the only task falling at Berta’s doorstep.

Arsenal want to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad as soon as possible too, a Spaniard who can kick-start a revolution of Arteta’s midfield.
