Laimer has truly earned his role at Bayern.

Bayern Munich’s signing of Konrad Laimer was one of the worst kept secrets of German football a couple of years back, with the Austrian’s failed moved in 2022 paving the way for a free transfer in 2023, agreed months before the season had ended.

Unfortunately, things had changed for Bayern once Laimer arrived. Julian Nagelsmann, who had heavily advocated for Bayern to sign the former Abersee youth player, had been sacked with the infamous tagline of “the treble being in danger.” After the the dreams of a treble totally collapsed after Nagelsmann’s departure, board member for sport Hasan Salihamidžić and CEO Oliver Kahn were also let go.

Just like that, everybody involved in bringing Laimer to Bayern was gone. This had all the signs of a transfer gone wrong, with Laimer not being at fault for any of it. But he worked hard to earn his role under new coach Thomas Tuchel and has solidified himself as an important member of the squad in his two years at the club.

New sporting director Christoph Freund even recently suggested that Bayern would like to keep him in the long term: “We’re very happy with him. Konny is playing an important role in our team and can play in many positions,” Freund told 90minuten Fußball (via @iMiaSanMia). “The way he plays football is good for the team. He’s extremely active in every game and wins the ball a lot. Konny has further developed his football skills and plays an important role in many matches. He’s held in very high regard within the team. He’s a guy who always gives his all in training. His contract ends in 2027, but the plan is long-term. I feel that Konrad Laimer and Bayern Munich are a very good fit. His ambition matches the club’s goals.”

Well done, Konrad.
