It is hard to imagine a better mentor for goalkeeping than Manuel Neuer.

Manuel Neuer is unarguably one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. Depending on where you sit, you likely rate him as the greatest of all time. All great things come to an end though, and Neuer is no exception. Despite an exceptional career, the cracks in Neuer’s reign in net at Bayern Munich have started to show.

A question for many years now has been who will replace Neuer at Bayern? For years now, it appeared to be Alex Nübel but he has yet to reach his potential. A new contender has recently emerged in Jonas Urbig. Signed from Köln, Urbig quickly took the opportunity to jump in when Neuer was injured.

However, with Urbig’s flashes of excellence thus far, the Köln talent has equally made as many mistakes. Neuer though was quick to jump in an defend the 21-year-old.

“It happened to me too, keep going,” Neuer told Urbig as reported by Tz (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

It was also reported that there is a strong belief for Urbig already within the club. Neuer considers Urbig as a better fit than with Nübel in the past.

Neuer has been encouraging Urbig and there is really no better mentor than the legendary German goalkeeper. Urbig has some big shoes to fill if he is really going to take Neuer’s seat as Bayern’s starting goalkeeper. With Neuer’s fitness suboptimal at the moment, Urbig certainly has a chance to shine.
