Ipswich fans in furious reaction to Wolves player for taunting them about looming relegation

Wolves defender Toti Gomes instantly cemented himself as public enemy number one among Ipswich Town supporters.

The centre-back played a key role for Wolves as they picked up a valuable 2-1 win over the Tractor Boys.

Jorgen Strand Larsen scored the winner in the 84th minute after Pablo Sarabia cancelled out Liam Delap‘s first-half opener.

The result also put a major dent in Ipswich’s faint hopes of survival.

Wolves’ win meant there is now 12 points between them and 18th-placed Ipswich with just seven games remaining.

Barring a capitulation from Wolves and Ipswich hitting a remarkable patch of form, it looks like Kieran McKenna‘s side will make an instant return to the Championship.

As if Ipswich’s wounds weren’t already open enough, a brutal act from Gomes made sure there was extra salt rubbed into it.

According to Troy Deeney, who was at Portman Road on commentary duties for talkSPORT, Gomes appeared to poke fun at Ipswich supporters about their looming fate.

However, Deeney held nothing back in a scathing verdict of the promoted trio’s feeble attempts to stay up this season.

“Just looking down there at the pitch, it looks like a few Ipswich fans try to have a word with Toti,” Deeney said.

“The Wolves centre-back was unnecessarily letting them all know that they are going down.

“It’s a great day for Wolves, but Ipswich… unfortunately, I think Simon Jordan said it great earlier in the week – the three teams that have come up have been pathetic.

“To put it into context, there’s five minutes left, they’re 2-1 down and they’re playing out from the back. Get it forward, try and create some chaos!

“Unfortunately they never did that and there only looked like one winner in the second-half.

“Ipswich, at the end of this season it will be about what do they do moving forward? Can they have a little bit of self-respect and give this wonderful fan base something to get up for?

“Because right now, it looks like a real effort and it’s going to need some real magic for them to stay up, because from what I’ve seen on the pitch it looks like job done.

“They’ve only won here once all season and that’s the bottom line – remarkably, that was against Chelsea.

“But it seems like that’s pretty much the relegation picture all but done and dusted. It’s a massive win for Wolves.”

The loss to Wolves marked Ipswich’s sixth in a row at Portman Road and their 19th in the league.

However, McKenna and his troops will look to salvage some pride when they travel to Chelsea next Sunday.
