Their relegation after 31 games is the earliest a club has been relegated from England’s top flight.
They beat the record previously jointly held by Ipswich Town and Derby Country, whose relegation was confirmed with six matches left to play in the seasons of 1994/95 and 2007/08 respectively.
After their latest defeat, the Saints took to social media to confirm that they were dropping out of the Premier League.
But the club refused to mention that they were relegated. Instead confirming their place in next season’s Championship campaign to the dismay of fans on social media.

A second said: “Don’t use the R word.”
Speaking after the game, Southampton manager Ivan Juric, who replaced Russell Martin last December, said: “We know that we are in a bad situation and today was a certain thing. I cannot say anything bad about the players, it was a really tough year for everyone.”
On avoiding Derby’s 11-point record, he added: “We have to avoid that record. Do our best. It cannot happen.”
Southampton have won a measly two league games this season and have lost a staggering 25 matches.
They have just 10 points on the board and are in danger of breaking Derby’s record that has stood since 2008.
They face the likes of Aston Villa, Fulham, Manchester City and Arsenal in their remaining fixtures of the season.
