Bayern’s wastefulness and Inter’s sharpness saw the result go against the run of play.
Bayern Munich’s familiarly frustrating loss to Inter Milan left a big question mark. Can this team do good by their fans and make it to the Champions League final in Munich ? Because the manner of the loss to Inter was concerning to say the least. The old ghost of a dominant performance that ultimately turned fruitless was back to haunt the Bavarians. Eric Dier, one of the Bayern defenders broke down the game and gave his thoughts about the game and that late Inter goal.
Bayern’s performance
In the post-match interview with TNT Sports (via @iMiaSanMia) Dier summed up the performance. He said “In the second half, I think we played well. We had a lot of possession and we just couldn’t take our chances. Maybe not a lot of clear cut chances, but we had enough to do more. Obviously then it’s disappointing to concede the goal when we are 1-1.”
The Lautaro Martinez goal was sheer brilliance on Inter’s part. Bayern however, came back and scored the equalizer. They drew level, courtesy of the Raumdeuter, Thomas Müller. Inter unfortunately struck back in the 88th minute that saw them steal the victory from Munich’s hands.
That late goal
The second goal, scored by Davide Frattesi, was on the back of a big mix-up in the Bayern backline. Sacha Boey’s questionable decision to abandon his marker gave the extra room to expose Bayern’s underbelly. Dier was the last man closest to Frattesi but failed to block that shot. Upon being asked whether that goal was due a lapse in concentration, Dier said, “I don’t know, I don’t think it’s a lack of concentration. I haven’t seen it again. The feeling on the pitch obviously was that we were trying to go and win it.”

Big injuries — The elephant in the room
Bayern have been hit hard with injuries in their most important phase of the season. Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala are the biggest misses going into UCL knockouts. What is worse than losing 1-2 at home, is having to play in Milan with a goal disadvantage and without two very important players.
Answering a question regarding injuries, Dier said “That’s football you know. Teams get injuries. It is what it is. That’s not something we are dwelling on. As for what we can do better, I think like you saw, it is a game against them where you just always have to be alive. They are always ready to hurt you in any moment. It’s about staying focused, controlling the transition and trying to keep possession and create as many chances we can.”
Having said that, It’s still not over. Bayern were the dominant team no question, but need to turn their dominance into big game results. Without that, all the effort and all the chances created mean nothing.
