Chelsea have produced some incredible academy products over the years.
Mason Mount won the Champions League with Chelsea, Reece James is the current club captain, Dominic Solanke is a key player at Tottenham while Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Fikayo Tomori are all carving out great careers in Italy.
Chelsea’s academy system has produced some real stars, but, unfortunately, as with any academy, there are always those players who never quite reach their potential.
Ravel Morrison was supposed to be a star at Manchester United, but he didn’t quite reach that level, while Charlie Patino was seen as Arsenal’s best ever academy talent, and he’s not made it at the Emirates.
Speaking to The Sun, former Chelsea youth player, Cole Dasilva has been discussing some of the players he played with in Chelsea’s academy, and he says Charlie Colkett was supposed to be a star, but, unfortunately, it didn’t quite pan out like that.
Charlie Colkett should’ve been a star at Chelsea
Dasilva spoke about some of his teammates at Chelsea in the academy.
The defender says Jeremie Boga was the best player he played with, while he noted that Charlie Colkett should’ve been a star as well due to his crazy talent.
“The best I would say the best is Jeremie Boga. The things he could do, pure natural talent on him, add that in with the hard work, it was crazy,” Dasilva said.
“Charlie Colkett too, he was one of the most naturally talented left-footers about. The things he could do were crazy. Everyone who has been around him knows how good he was and how good he is, it’s unfortunate that for some reason he hasn’t hit the heights we all expected.”
What happened to Charlie Colkett?
Charlie Colkett was one of the top talents in Chelsea’s academy once upon a time, but, sadly, he didn’t quite make good on that potential.
The midfielder would never actually go on to make a single appearance for Chelsea, but he did appear on the bench on occasion.
Colkett would be sent out on numerous loans, before eventually leaving Chelsea in 2019 to head to Ostersund.
The midfielder would return to England three years later, where he has since bounced around the lower leagues, before dropping into non-league.
Charlie Colkett’s career path | League | Games |
Chelsea | Premier League | 0 |
Bristol Rovers* | League One | 17 |
Swindon* | League One | 19 |
Vitesse* | Eredivisie | 11 |
Shrewsbury* | League One | 6 |
Ostersund | Swedish League | 67 |
Cheltenham | League One | 9 |
Crewe | League Two | 23 |
Notts County* | League Two | 3 |
Gateshead | National League | 16 |
At the age of 28, any chance of Colkett making it at the top level appears to have evaporated, but, at one point, this young man appeared to be the next big thing out of the Chelsea academy.
