Prince William reveals heartwarming reason for attendance at Aston Villa vs PSG Champions League clash

5 Min Read

Wednesday night was a big one for every Aston Villa fan.

The Birmingham club would compete in the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 42 years and were hoping for a huge performance from Unai Emery’s men in Paris.

The contest had many storylines attached to it from Marco Asencio returning to his parent club PSG, to Marcus Rashford returning to the Parc de Princes, to Luis Enrique and Unai Emery facing each other again after their famous La Remontada clash back in 2017.

The one that captured the attention of everyone in France was Emi Martinez taunting the French people on his way to Paris and with all this connected to the Champions League contest, Prince William simply had to be in attendance at the Parc des Princes.

Prince William wanted George to experience a big European away day

It is well known that Prince William is an Aston Villa fan and a general lover of football as the 42-year-old was the President of The Football Association until July 2024.

With his beloved Villa competing in a Champions League quarter-final for the first time in 42 years, the Prince of Wales travelled to Paris with his son, George, and told TNT Sports the real reason for the trip to the Parc des Princes.

In response to Rio Ferdinand’s question as to whether it was a “lads’ trip”, Prince William stated: “I’m not sure how many Villa fans there will be but they will make themselves well known.

“I have got my son here too, so I am on my best behaviour but 43 years since this has happened and I want George to experience a night out in a big competition, those memories are really important to create and bringing him away is important.

“I am open to who they support, I am biased but they come to games with Villa so it will likely be Villa, but I have left the other two at home, probably watching on TV. We will see who they support.”

Attending Aston Villa games is a regular occurrence for the Prince of Wales and many may wonder when this all began for the 42-year-old.

How often does Prince William attend Villa games?

Prince William is often spotted at Aston Villa games multiple times a season and his appearance in Paris will not be the last, as the Prince of Wales will very likely be in attendance at Villa Park next week as well as the FA Cup semi-final, where the Birmingham club take on Crystal Palace at Wembley.

The 42-year-old previously stated that he has been going to Villa games since 2013 and why he chose the Villans over bigger clubs that his friends supported.

“A long time ago at school, I got into football, big time,’ William said via the Daily Mail. “I was looking around for a club to support, and all my friends at school were either Manchester United fans or Chelsea fans.

“Aston Villa has always had a great history. I’ve got friends who support Aston Villa and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton versus Aston Villa, it was a semi-final.”

Villa fans will be more than happy to see the Prince of Wales at future games as that is a clear sign that their football club is doing well, which is expected to continue under Emery’s leadership.
