Tottenham already have ‘incredible’ Destiny Udogie replacement lined up as Man City target move for Spurs full-back – opinion

Tottenham Hotspur full-back Destiny Udogie has hinted at who could replace him, with the Italian reportedly being targeted by Manchester City.

Destiny Udogie, 22, has developed impressively since his Tottenham Hotspur debut in 2023. He has appeared 51 times for the London club, started 22 times in the Premier League this season, and was nominated for the competition’s Young Player of the Season Award in 2024.

According to GIVEMESPORT, his performances have impressed Manchester City, who have not yet replaced Kyle Walker. Udogie is under contract in London until 2030, and Spurs will not be keen to let him go.

However, the Italian has hinted at who he thinks could replace him if a move materialises.

Djed Spence could be perfect Destiny Udogie replacement

24-year-old Djed Spence joined Spurs before Udogie, but was loaned to Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa before finally having a chance at first-team football this season under Ange Postecoglou.

Now that he has built a run of form in the team, defensive colleague Udogie believes he’s made a big contribution.

“I think Djed is an incredible player,” Udogie told Spurs club media. “We are really close friends, we speak a lot and we try to help each other in the games.

“Since he’s come in he’s having a top season. He’s helping the team a lot. We speak every day and try to help by teaching each other new stuff.”

Comparing the pair’s per-90 stats from the current Premier League campaign shows how Spence’s numbers are catching up with Udogie.

Udogie Spence
Blocks 1.91 1.52
Tackles won 2.27 1.88
Clearances 1.75 3.48
Errors leading to a shot 0.05 0.07
Crosses 0.98 1.09

How Tottenham feel about Spence development

Spence was thrust into first-team football in December 2024 as Spurs were plagued by injuries to their defence and quickly became crucial.

In the first 15 games of the season, he had played 64 league minutes altogether. In the 15 games that followed his first Premier League start on 15th December, he has played the full 90 minutes 12 times.

His rapid rise has understandably sparked discussions about his potential. Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, journalist Alasdair Gold said: “From what I understand, there’s a real belief that now if he keeps pushing on from within the club, there’s this belief that he could be one of the best fullbacks around in the Premier League especially because he’s got everything in his game.”

“But if you can train him up on all the defensive aspects and concentration aspects and everything as well, he could be such an all-rounder. He’s like a scary talent.”
