Mohamed Salah explains why he signed new Liverpool contract – ‘If I don’t believe that’

4 Min Read

Mohamed Salah has his sights set on winning more silverware after signing a new contract at Liverpool.

The Egyptian’s new deal at Anfield was confirmed on Friday, with Salah putting pen to paper on an agreement that will keep him at the club until 2027. The contract brings an end to months of speculation, during which it had seemed as though the 32-year-old might have been playing his final year at Liverpool.

Now though, Salah is set to bring up a decade at the club, having joined back in 2017, and fans will hope Virgil van Dijk won’t be far behind him in signing a new deal. The Liverpool captain revealed “progress” had been made in his talks with the club this week, and he is thought to be closing in on a new contract, although an announcement is not expected to follow on Friday.

With his future now decided, Salah will have his eyes on breaking more records at Liverpool. He is already third on the club’s all-time top scorers list, and will be looking to move up to second over the next couple of years.

Not only that, but he is also on course to move up the Premier League’s all-time list – he currently sits level with Sergio Aguero on 184, with only Andrew Cole (187), Wayne Rooney (208), Harry Kane (213) and Alan Shearer (260) ahead of him.

Crucially though, Salah has fixed his gaze on winning more trophies with Liverpool. The Reds are on course to lift the Premier League title this season, with a maximum of just 11 points separating them from being crowned champions over the remaining seven games.

Liverpool missed out on adding more silverware to their collection this season, having lost in the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle while also being knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain. Salah though is confident there will be more success down the road.

“If I don’t believe that, I would have not signed,” Salah told Liverpool’s official website. “I believe the team can win trophies. With the support of the fans and the city, and the support they always give us in the games, I believe we can win many trophies in the next years.”

Salah added: “I think I said in the beginning of the season, I just want to win the Premier League more than anything else. I want it so bad, to be fair.

“The fans deserve it — last time we won it we didn’t celebrate it that much. Hopefully we do it this time. There’s still seven games to go, it’s not going to be easy at all because Arsenal are also catching up. We’ll give it our all and hopefully in the end we can win it.”
