Tottenham Hotspur take on Wolves in the Premier League before their Europa League second-leg clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have nothing to play for in the league. They are currently 14th in the table, and even if they play out of their skin in the final games of the campaign, they are unlikely to even make it into the top eight.
That is why the focus is on the Europa League. If Spurs win that competition, it will not just end their trophy drought but they will qualify for the Champions League next season, which would be massive.
But, they do have a game against Wolves to take care of before facing Frankfurt on Thursday.
Paul Merson predicts Wolves vs Tottenham result
Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg on Thursday.
The tie hangs in the balance now, and Postecoglou will know very well that he will need all of his players at their best to beat the German side away from home.
That is why he may rest a few players for the game against Wolves on Sunday, and Paul Merson has urged Tottenham fans to ‘understand’ that a loss in this fixture is fine.
All the emphasis should be on the second leg against Frankfurt, so the pundit believes Wolves will come out on top against Postecoglou’s men in the Premier League.
He wrote on Sportskeeda: “This is a nothing game for both teams. I’m picking Wolves to win because Tottenham have two season-defining matches, either side of this game, in the Europa League.
“Spurs’ season is on the line, and fans must understand that even if they lose against Wolves, all that matters is that they beat Frankfurt in the Europa League!
“When Matheus Cunha got the ban, I thought Wolves would be in trouble. But credit to them, they have been decent in recent weeks.
“Obviously, the fact that the three teams below them have been poor has helped them, but they still had to go out and win games, which they did.”
Merson’s prediction: Wolves 2-0 Tottenham
Tottenham’s last six results against Wolves
Wolves have had their problems over the years.
The Wanderers have always had a good side, but for one reason or another, they have found themselves in the bottom half of the table more often than not.
However, despite that, Wolves have picked up some big results in recent years, and Spurs know about it better than most teams.
Date | Result | Score |
December 29, 2024 | Draw | Tottenham 2-2 Wolves |
February 17, 2024 | Wolves win | Tottenham 1-2 Wolves |
November 11, 2023 | Wolves win | Wolves 2-1 Tottenham |
March 4, 2023 | Wolves win | Wolves 1-0 Tottenham |
August 20, 2022 | Tottenham win | Tottenham 1-0 Wolves |
February 13, 2022 | Wolves win | Tottenham 0-2 Wolves |
Spurs have managed just one win in their last six games against Wolves, scoring five goals and conceding nine in those fixtures.
That is a really poor record, and with all the focus on the Europa League clash next Thursday, we won’t be surprised if Vitor Pereira’s side gets another positive result.
But, a good win for Tottenham could give them some much-needed confidence ahead of the second leg, which is why they should go for it.
