Tottenham keen to sign £43m forward as European giants make stance clear

This summer is a big one for Tottenham Hotspur as the North London club have many issues that need addressing.

Spurs have experienced a disappointing season as Ange Postecoglou’s men currently sit 14th in the Premier League standings, having won just 11 out of their 31 matches.

The Europa League is Tottenham’s last hope of making their season a success and if they fail to win the European competition, Daniel Levy could part ways with Postecoglou.

When it comes to the playing squad, there are also areas that Spurs need to address. Tottenham want to offer Lucas Bergvall a new contract before bringing in any new signings, and the North London club also have to make a decision on Mathys Tel.

What is happening between Mathys Tel and Tottenham

Tel joined Tottenham on loan from Bayern Munich in January and the Premier League club have a £43m option to buy in the forward’s contract.

The 19-year-old has struggled to make an impact at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, the North London club are happy with the Bayern Munich loanee and are considering a permanent move, but no final decision has been made yet, reports Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.

Tottenham are unwilling to match the buy option in Tel’s current contract and want to renegotiate as they know the youngster has no future at Bayern under the current leadership and Vincent Kompany, while the German giants plan to sell the forward this summer.

This could be a risky move from Spurs as Chelsea are also interested in Tel and if the Blues are willing to pay around £43m, that could see them land the French talent.

Ange Postecoglou has faith in Mathys Tel

Before adding new players to his squad, Postecoglou will want to keep hold of his key stars as Man City are showing interest in Destiny Udogie.

Tel is considered one of those and speaking to the press on Friday, the Australian coach has backed the 19-year-old to be a success in North London, should they acquire his services permanently this summer.

“Mathys is important for us,” Postecoglou said via Fabrizio Romano. “When he came in, people forget, he hadn’t played hardly at all at Bayern and we threw him in. We really believe he can make an impact and physically, he’s much better now.”

Since moving to Tottenham in January, Tel has featured in just 10 games, providing just two goals across 502 minutes of action.

Spurs believe the youngster can improve on that next season, hence why they are keen to add him to their squad permanently.
