Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund fought to a 2-2 draw.

Die Folgen: Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Dortmund (Bavarian Football Works)

Another unfulfilling result for Bayern Munich as the team fought to a 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker.

The game was fun, intense, and definitely a good representation of the rivalry, but the Bavarians needed help from Union Berlin to maintain their six-point lead in the Bundesliga. Let’s dive in…here are some quick hitters on the match:

  • As always, let’s begin with a look at the starting XI:
  • Vincent Kompany did the right thing in starting Thomas Müller. Otherwise, everything went as planned. Josip Stanišić getting the nod at left-back also shows that Kompany is committed to using the Croatian against Inter Milan on Wednesday.
  • Müller did not take advantage of his chances, but he might have been Bayern Munich’s best attacker on the day.
  • Bayern Munich started the match with a lot of energy, but efficiency in front of goal would prove to be an obstacle once again for the Bavarians. As for Borussia Dortmund, the visitors did not appear to be too bothered by the atmosphere or Bayern Munich.
  • The two teams looked intense and had fire, but had heavy legs. Plenty of heart, but fatigue from the heavy schedule of late affected both squads.
  • The match went into halftime 0-0, but it did feel like something would eventually break — this time it was Bayern Munich center-back Kim Min-jae.
  • Julian Ryerson lofted a cross from the left side toward the back post. Min-jae appeared to have trouble reading the trajectory of the ball (not the first time we have seen that from him) and while trying to track the flight of the ball, Maximilian Beier slipped in front of Min-jae for the header goal. BVB was up 1-0 in the 48th minute.
  • Beier does have some jets man…
  • Vincent Kompany did not address it after the game, but Min-jae was removed from the match six minutes later. You could see the dismay in Min-jae’s face after the goal scored.
  • Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka did a better job in the central midfield than they did against Inter Milan earlier this week. In the 63rd minute, Aleksandar Pavlović got back into gear when he subbed in for Goretzka. Goretzka had a terrific tackle deep in his own territory in the 56th minute.
  • Niklas Süle had an awesome challenge from behind on his old golf buddy, Müller, in the 58th minute.
  • Michael Olise had one of those games where he did some great things and then nullified them by forcing some plays.
  • In the 65th minute, the unlikely trio of Serge Gnabry, Müller, and Raphaël Guerreiro combined for a goal. Guerreiro ultimately converted a very nice pass from Müller to knot the game at 1-1.
  • In the 69th minute, we saw some #GnabryMagic, something which has been absent for quite a bit. A seemingly innocent pass from Stanišić to Gnabry led to the winger pulling his best Leo Messi impersonation by dancing through Borussia Dortmund’s defense for a highlight reel-worthy goal.
  • I mean…that is the kind of goal that would excite a lot of clubs in the transfer market.
  • Interestingly, Goretzka’s reaction to Gnabry’s goal was one of fierce appreciation.
  • Unfortunately, BVB has an answer. In the 75th minute, Waldemar Anton (!?) tied the game after Serhou Guirassy’s incredible shot was saved by Jonas Urbig.
  • Harry Kane did not have his best game. On a different day, he might walk away with three goals, but much like his performance against Inter Milan, the Englishman’s finishing left a lot to be desired.
  • Overall, it was a fun, hard-fought game…but one that was — once again — unfulfilling for Bayern Munich. The Bavarians will have to be a lot better than they were this week if they want to have any chance of defeating Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Despite being comfortable at Barcelona, both Liverpool and Manchester City are monitoring Lamine Yamal in the hope of possibly signing the 17-year-old winger in the foreseeable future.

Bayern not only club eyeing Henrique (Gianluca Di Marzio via ESPN)

Inter Milan could challenge Bayern Munich for Olympique Marseille winger Luis Henrique:

Inter Milan and Marseille are some way apart in their valuation of Luis Henrique. The Serie A club are prepared to pay €25m for the 23-year-old forward, who is also tracked by Premier League clubs, but Marseille are pushing for €35m.

Bayern wants Gittens as first option over Henrique (Sempre Inter)

While Bayern Munich wants Olympique Marseille winger Luis Henrique, one report indicated that the Bavarians are actually higher on Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens:

Bayern Munich prefer a move for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens over Inter Milan target Luis Henrique, but their pursuit of Florian Wirtz complicates things. This according to German tabloid BILD, via FCInterNews. They report that the Bavarians could decide to sign Henrique if they go all-out to sign Wirtz financially.

Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are both reportedly keen on Marseille winger Luis Henrique. Inter are reportedly in talks with Marseille for the Brazilian – and even ready to make an offer.

Meanwhile, Bayern have reportedly approached Henrique’s representatives. Reportedly, Bayern have cooled their interest in Henrique, however. This could give Inter a virtually free run at signing the 23-year-old. And BILD confirm that Bayern do not see Henrique as a priority target.

Rather, the German tabloid report, Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is Bayern’s top target on the flanks. But the 21-year-old would almost certainly cost more than Henrique. And that is a potential issue for Bayern, as they plan to go all-out to sign Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz this summer.

Wirtz is the absolute priority target for Bayern ahead of next season. Even if signing him means paying a massive fee. Therefore, Bayern might not have much room left in the transfer budget for other targets. Including Bynoe-Gittens.

It is for that reason, reports BILD, that the German giants have not entirely exited the race for Luis Henrique.

Modrić to leave Madrid? (Marca via ESPN)

When looking at Thomas Müller’s situation at Bayern Munich, it is hard to not at least compare it with what is going on with Luka Modrić at Real Madrid.

Both veterans are in a very odd spot with their respective careers:

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić is being targeted for a move to a club in Qatar when his contract at the Bernabéu expires in the summer.

Ortega on Leverkusen’s radar (Bild via ESPN)

Bayer Leverkusen could be looking to make a move for Manchester City goalkeeper and Germany international Stefan Ortega:

Bayer Leverkusen could make an offer for Manchester City reserve goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, hoping the 32-year-old could be available for as little as €8m.

Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show: Bayern Munich 1-2 Inter Milan (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich hosted Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena for a Champions League showdown that just about everyone knew would be tough.

Inter Milan proved to be extremely strong — strong enough to pull out a deflating 2-1 victory courtesy of some extremely inefficient play from Bayern Munich’s attack and bad decision-making from the coaching staff and backline.

Inter Milan was even good enough to hold off the bit of #MüllerMagic that Bayern Munich received in the second half. Let’s dive into this one on the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show. This is what we have on tap:

  • A look at the starting XI and our thoughts on two of the selections.
