Man United injury news: Red Devils suffer bitter blow ahead of Lyon showdown in Europa League

2 Min Read

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has suffered an injury during Sunday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with his availability against Lyon next week now in severe doubt.

Zirkzee came off the bench to score in Man United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final last week, and he was then rewarded with a start against Newcastle.

However, the Netherlands international pulled up following a sprint in the early stages of the second period, and he limped off the field to be replaced by Rasmus Hojlund.

Man United head coach Ruben Amorim will be asked about Zirkzee’s fitness after the clash with Newcastle, but it would now be a surprise to see the recent arrival from Bologna feature against Lyon in the team’s biggest match of the season.

Zirkzee has found it difficult to show his best form since arriving from Bologna last summer, but the ex-Bayern Munich youngster has shown some positive signs in recent weeks, and his absence against Lyon would be a major blow for a Red Devils outfit that have struggled to score goals throughout the 2024-25 campaign.
