Mohamed Salah breaks yet another record in first appearance since signing new contract

Another game, another Premier League record for Mohamed Salah.

Salah has been the best player in the league this season, making the prospect of him leaving on a free this summer the most talked-about story of the campaign.

After months of speculation that felt like a shadow hanging over an otherwise exceptional season, Liverpool announced on Friday that the Egyptian would be renewing his contract for two more years.

The news was celebrated not only by the supporters—the Liverpool dressing room was equally ecstatic over Salah signing.

Speaking to the press on Friday, Arne Slot discussed FSG’s decision to give Salah a new deal, expressing his excitement to continue working with such a talent.

And in true Salah style, it took him just 18 minutes—on his first appearance since signing—to break yet another record in what has been a historic season.

Salah breaks goal involvements record for 38-game season

Salah’s assist to Luis Diaz opened the scoring at home to West Ham. It was a signature outside of the boot cross to find the Colombian at the back post for a tap-in—taking Salah past Thierry Henry and Erling Haaland for most Premier League goal involvements in a 38-game season (45).

What’s more impressive is that he has six more games to extend the gap. Three more goal involvements will get him the outright Premier League record, passing Andy Cole and Alan Shearer—who each managed 47 in 42 games.

With 27 goals and 18 assists in 32 games, Salah’s production defies belief and will surely put him in contention for the best individual Premier League season of all time.

Since arriving at Anfield in 2017, no one has come close to Salah’s sustained level of production.

Now that he’s set to stay for another two seasons at least, he will be hoping to continue his record-setting form.

How far up the all-time scorers’ list Salah could climb

Salah’s aim now will be to climb the all-time lists. He is already tied in fifth place with Sergio Aguero and should pass both the Argentinian and fourth-place Andy Cole by the end of the season.

Player Goals Games
1. Alan Shearer 260 441
2. Harry Kane 213 316
3. Wayne Rooney 208 491
4. Andy Cole 187 408
=5 Sergio Aguero 184 275
=5 Mohamed Salah 184 291

Alan Shearer—who played 441 games in the English top flight—is a distance ahead at 260 goals, but Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane are catchable.

With the age of the squad and impending summer spend, Liverpool should be a team challenging for titles in the coming seasons. Arne Slot will be looking to add attacking talent, which may ease the reliance on Salah while also boosting creativity around him.

Barring any serious injury or dropoff in form, bagging 30 goals in two seasons (and some change) would be nothing out of the ordinary for Salah, and is a challenge the Egyptian King will not shy away from.
