Chelsea’s win over Fulham at the weekend had significance beyond the fact that it helped keep them in the hunt for Champions League football next season.
That is because the result also triggered a key clause in the contract covering Jadon Sancho’s loan from Manchester United. The clause states that the loan must be made into a permanent move if Chelsea finish 15th or better in the Premier League, and the conditions for that have now been met.
Despite this, and the fact that the obligation to buy is ₤25 million, there is an additional break clause. This enables the West London club to void the option provided that they pay United an additional ₤5 million.
Sancho has had a mixed time since he made the move to Stamford Bridge, and only in flashes has he shown the form that once made him one of the most exciting young players in Europe.
Chelsea may well be inclined to “eat’ the extra cost, get his wages off their books, and leave the headache of what to do with him t o United.
