Liverpool have won their second Premier League title following their 5-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday, with the Reds now out of reach of second-placed Arsenal with four games spare.
Many imagined that boss Arne Slot would struggle to follow in the footsteps of legendary former head coach Jurgen Klopp, especially as the Dutchman used essentially the same group of players as the German had at his disposal when they finished third in 2023-24.
The club’s title triumph was their 20th and means they have drawn level with Manchester United as the most successful team in English top-flight history.
During the course of the 2024-25 campaign, the Premier League was arguably won in crucial moments, and here Sports Mole takes a look at five key games in the champions’ road to glory.
Manchester United United 0-3 Liverpool (September 1, 2024)
Liverpool had beaten Ipswich Town and Brentford 2-0 in their first two league fixtures of the season, and their clash against fierce rivals Manchester United on September 1 at Old Trafford was earmarked as Slot’s first true test.
However, the game turned out to be relatively straightforward, with the Reds winning 3-0 at Old Trafford for the first time in four games.
Beating United so comprehensively was a boost for Slot, and the victory was arguably his first true statement win.
Arsenal 2-2 Liverpool (October 27, 2024)
When Liverpool faced title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates on October 27, the Reds only boasted a four-point advantage, and a defeat would have given the Londoners confidence that they would finally clinch the Premier League trophy.
The Merseysiders did trail twice in that game, but a first-half header from Virgil van Dijk and a late equaliser from Mohamed Salah ensured that the game ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
Liverpool’s comeback at the Emirates underpinned their status as genuine title contenders this season, and hinted at the resilience they would need to show to not fall away as they did in 2023-24.
Liverpool 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion (November 2, 2024)
Slot’s side had to come from behind to beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 on November 2, with two quickfire goals from Salah and Cody Gakpo in the second half enough to secure all three points.
The significance of the victory should not be underestimated given Arsenal had been beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United earlier on the same day, and their lead over the Gunners grew to seven points.
Liverpool demonstrated that they were able to take advantage of their rivals’ slip-ups and wrestle control of the title race away from Arsenal.
Liverpool 2-0 Manchester City (December 12, 2024)
Manchester City have more often than not been the team to beat since Pep Guardiola‘s arrival in England in 2016.
City came to Anfield on December 12 as the reigning champions and were comprehensively outplayed despite only losing 2-0.
Salah scored and provided an assist to Gakpo on the day and helped move the Merseysiders nine points ahead of Arsenal after 13 matchweeks, and there was a growing confidence that 2024-25 would be Liverpool’s season.
Manchester City 0-2 Liverpool (February 23, 2025)
Perhaps the most significant result of the campaign came in the away fixture against Man City, with the Reds winning 2-0 at the Etihad on February 23.
Slot’s team were far more reserved against City this time around, but Salah inspired Liverpool to another win with yet another goal, as well as an assist for Dominik Szoboszlai.
The Reds moved 11 points ahead of the Gunners after 27 Premier League games, and as the season approached its final stages, it became clear that Liverpool would not be caught.
