Mohamed Salah said his second Premier League triumph is “100 percent” better than his first as a Liverpool player, speaking minutes after the Reds secured the 2024/25 title.
A 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on a gloriously sunny Anfield day was the perfect way for fans to end what has been a 35-year wait to see the team win the title. The last, of course, came in very different circumstances as Jurgen Klopp ’s side lifted the trophy at an empty Anfield during the 2019/20 Covid-impacted season.
Salah played a pivotal role in both campaigns and is one of the few players to have earned a second league winners’ medal with the club. He inevitably got on the scoresheet on Sunday, firing in from a Liverpool counter attack in the second period to score the fourth goal. Salah even tried to claim the fifth, although replays showed it clearly came off Destiny Udogie.
Liverpool’s No. 11 said that he was “frustrated” at half-time that he hadn’t yet scored, but ended the day with a huge smile on his face. “To win the Premier League here with the fans is something special. You saw that here today and every game. It’s an incredible feeling,” he told Sky Sports afterwards.
Asked whether it was better this time around, Salah seemed to indicate that winning the title with a different squad was a sign of the club’s longevity. “This is way better, 100 percent. Without Sadio [Mane], without Jurgen, without Bobby [Firmino] and everybody. It’s more special with the fans.
“You have a different group now, a different manager and it shows that you are able to do it again. That’s something special.”
Salah’s goal brings his number of goal involvements up to 46 for the season in the Premier League, a record for a 38-game campaign. He now needs just one more to equal the tally of 47 set collectively by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, both of which came when the season had 46 fixtures.
Asked afterwards if he is chasing any personal milestones, Salah replied: “Goal involvements, yeah for sure. Hopefully I am going to break it soon. I broke the record for 38 – I have one goal or assist to go. I counted! It’s something to push me forward to keep working hard, for sure.”
Liverpool will have to wait until the final game of the season at home to Crystal Palace to finally collect the trophy, by which stage Salah could also have secured personal awards for the most goals and assists respectively in the 2024/25 season.
