What Liverpool owner John Henry told Arne Slot after Premier League title secured

4 Min Read

Liverpool owner and Fenway Sports Group (FSG) chief John W. Henry flew in to Merseyside to watch today’s game with Spurs, reveling in the wild title celebrations that followed at Anfield.

During his post-match press conference, Arne Slot was asked about what the American told him on the field when the pair were spotted embracing, though he couldn’t really recall it… “Probably congratulations!” he explained. “I don’t remember exactly what he said, but it was special for them as well to be part of this moment.

“For them to trust me in this position, maybe now everyone says it makes complete sense, but the moment they signed me, maybe not everyone was as convinced as everyone is now.

“So that tells you what a special club this is because they don’t always go for the most simple or obvious choice. They make the choice that is best for the club.

“It must be a special time for them, the second time in five years that they win the league. And to do it in front of our fans is special, including for them.”

Jetting in for the big occasion were also Slot’s family, including his wife and two daughters. “It is special to have them with me because my family, and all of the families of the players, have to make certain sacrifices if you do this job,” he added.

“Not only this season, my whole career. For me, like you, everyone works really hard, but we’re not always home.

“My family was still in Holland so, in moments, it was hard for me but also for them as well. To win it, everyone feels the few sacrifices we made were definitely worth it, and it is special they experience this moment as well.”

Liverpool.com says: FSG and the people behind the decision to go with Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor deserve a lot of credit. They couldn’t have found a better fit for what was required and that has been proven with what came after the German.

Slot embodies exactly what Liverpool is all about, but more importantly, he is a top coach who has some really good ideas. He has taken the team he inherited to another level and the most exciting thing is that there is still much more to come.

Next season, by which time he will have had another transfer window to add players and a full summer to work with them on the training field, the level should go up again. Over to you, Manchester City and Arsenal.
