Liverpool is about to win the Premier League title but Reds captain Virgil van Dijk won’t be lifting the trophy after the game against Spurs even if the job is completed. Instead, he will have to wait until the final day of the season against Crystal Palace.
And it will only be after that when fans can see the Liverpool players on the bus parading around town with the silverware — something that was denied when they won the Premier League title in 2020. Reds fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the trophy they have most coveted in recent times will have to wait for a few weeks.
The last game of the season will take place on May 25. The following day, which is the late May bank holiday in the UK, has been earmarked for the trophy parade.
Liverpool fans will line the streets to celebrate the title victory and revel in the exceptional season that Arne Slot has overseen. In his maiden campaign at Anfield, the Dutchman is set to get over the line and seal the prize that was most coveted by the fans.
“The overriding message today is very simple — we have a job to do,” Slot writes in today’s official matchday program. “It is a job that everyone associated with Liverpool FC should be excited about because the possibilities it creates are there for all to see but, as with every other game we have played this season, hard work will be absolutely crucial.
“So focusing on the job at hand is not just desirable, it is absolutely essential. On and off the pitch, our aim has to be to get as close as we possibly can to our A-game.
“Reaching those standards will not be easy — it never is — but it needs to be the objective of everyone who is inside the stadium today. So what we have now and in the remaining weeks of the season is a wonderful opportunity that we should grasp with both hands.
“Finishing top of this league would be an incredible achievement and having put ourselves in a position to do so, we now need to finish the work that began all the way back in the summer of last year.”
