Dominik Szoboszlai has been one of Arne Slot’s most important players as Liverpool have stormed their way to becoming Premier League champions this season.
Virgil van Dijk has lauded Szoboszlai’s performances and dubbed him as a “fantastic player” as the Hungarian international has taken his game to the next level this campaign.
After a mixed debut season under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, perhaps the Anfield faithful would have wondered why the Reds shelled out a £60 million (Sky Sports) fee to sign him.
But if there is one thing Arne Slot has proven during his time in Merseyside, it is that he is an expert at profiling players correctly — with even Cody Gakpo hailing the Liverpool boss for his improvement by playing him as a left-winger this season.
Similarly, Slot has deployed Dominik Szoboszlai in an advanced midfield role this season, which has paid off as Jurgen Klopp tasked him to play deeper in his final season at Liverpool.
Arne Slot loves Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai
Jens Toonstra has been speaking to Arne Slot about how he feels about Szoboszlai.
Toonstra captained Slot’s Feyenoord side in the 2021/2022 season and being an attacking midfielder himself, he would have been fascinated to hear his former manager’s thoughts on Szoboszlai.
The FC Utrecht man told the Dutch edition of ESPN that Arne Slot is a huge admirer of the Liverpool dynamo’s work rate: “I spoke to him recently about Szoboszlai.”
“He proudly said: ‘Look at how much work he does and at what pace.’ That typifies Slot; he always hammers on intensity with his players.”
Dominik Szoboszlai explained why his game has “changed” this season
The former RB Leipzig attacker has turned his doubters into believers, with even Ian Wright lauding Szoboszlai’s rise this season.
Even Pep Guardiola highlighted Szoboszlai’s incredible athleticism after Manchester City lost 2-0 to Liverpool earlier this campaign which goes to show the player he has become now.
It is easy to see why Arne Slot appreciates Szoboszlai after his conversation with Jens Troosta, with the player telling Liverpool’s official website his manager transformed his game: “It’s different. Last year I was playing as an eight and I think more as a defensive part of the game than offensively.”
Szoboszlai elaborated: “This time I am a little bit more offensively than defensively and I’m still doing the work for the defence part.”
“He changed my game a lot and I improved I think a lot under him because he was going in on a certain point that I was never thinking about to be improved.”
“I still can improve for sure and I’m working on it every day.”
