‘Move him on’: Ian Wright says Liverpool need to sell player who fans will always love

4 Min Read

Liverpool are the Premier League champions, but they can’t rest on their laurels.

Indeed, Liverpool need to build from a position of strength and kick on next season, and, often that means making some harsh decisions.

As good as this group of players have been this season, Liverpool need to continue to improve, and that means they may have to trim some of the fat in their squad.

Harvey Elliott could leave Liverpool after barely getting a chance this season, while Jamie Carragher wants Kostas Tsimikas sold.

Darwin Nunez is expected to leave Liverpool this summer, and speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Ian Wright has claimed that it is indeed time for the Reds to get rid of Nunez.

Ian Wright says Liverpool need to sell Darwin Nunez

Wright shared his verdict on Nunez and his future at Anfield.

The pundit says that it now looks like Nunez will never reach his potential on Merseyside and it’s time for the Reds to move on.

“I remember doing analysis on him right at the start, you have pace, he can sprint, he can finish with both feet, you thought it was only a matter of time before it clicks, but he’s doing the same thing, to this point where you probably have to move him on, because he’s not going to get it by the looks of things.”

“I think when you’re paying that kind of money it’s not for a substitute. Liverpool fans will love him forever, but if he could’ve clicked and taken those chances, and we’re talking about easy chances.

“Liverpool need that person like Torres or Suarez, they need something like that.

Fan favourites sold by Premier League champions

Wright says that Liverpool fans will always have a soft spot for Nunez, and that is true.

Indeed, say what you will about the Uruguayan, he’s turned up in some big moments for Liverpool and he always gave 100% for the team.

Sometimes, as difficult as it is, you do need to sell some players when you’re on top in order to evolve, as some of the most successful Premier League champions of all-time have shown.

Fan favourites sold by Premier League champions Year
Gabriel Jesus 2022
Oleksandr Zinchenko 2022
Raheem Sterling 2022
Petr Cech 2015
David Beckham 2003
Mark Hughes 1995

Football is a cut-throat business, and you need to be ruthless if you’re striving to improve.

Pep Guardiola got rid of the likes of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko off the back of triumphant title wins, while Chelsea got rid of a club legend in the shape of Petr Cech in 2015.

Nunez is a fan favourite, but it does feel as though it’s now is the time for the Reds to cash in and upgrade.
