Richard Hughes should now ditch Kerkez move and sign £40m star who wore Liverpool kits growing up – opinion

Since cementing his status as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, it seems like Liverpool have kept a close eye on Milos Kerkez’s rise.

Arne Slot apparently personally wishes to sign Kerkez and it is easy to see why as he is having the season of his life.

The Hungarian’s wand of a left foot, incredible engine and technical ability are traits that make him a shoo-in for becoming one of the best players in the world in his position very soon.

Kerkez can see himself at Liverpool as well due to the presence of Richard Hughes, who was the man behind his move to AFC Bournemouth.

As things stand, it seems like Liverpool’s next left-back could either be Milos Kerkez or Antonee Robinson.

Liverpool should sign Antonee Robinson instead of Milos Kerkez

Antonee Robinson has been on Liverpool’s radar since last year and alongside Kerkez, either of the pair could further elevate this Liverpool side.

Out of the two, Robinson would perhaps be a better signing for Liverpool than Kerkez for a number of reasons.

First things first, Robinson is level on Premier League assists with the likes of Mikkel Damsgaard and Bukayo Saka (10) this season while Kerkez has just five to his name — despite Bournemouth outperforming Fulham for most of the campaign until very recently.

PREMIER LEAGUE STATS ANTONEE ROBINSON MILOS KERKEZ
STARTS 32 34
GOALS 0 2
ASSISTS 10 5

Aside from being a superior creator, the USA international is also a far better athlete than the latter — as he showed in the Cottagers’ 2-2 draw at Anfield — with his running power over long distances and acceleration handing him the license to marshal the left flank in a manner that is truly rare.

Kerkez’s athleticism is outstanding as well but Robinson — with the latter making 61 more sprints than the former by early January — according to the Premier League’s official website (425 compared to 486) and covering the fourth-most distance in the division (210.5 km).

Defensively as well, the Milton Keynes-born full-back is a trickier customer to go past due to his aforementioned athleticism, habit of getting touch-tight to wingers like Mohamed Salah when he faced him in April while also being superior at defending inside the box.

With Robinson potentially being a Liverpool fan growing up as he admitted to wearing their kits as a child as well, he is likely to become an instant fan favourite and more importantly, he has much more experience in the Premier League — playing 133 games while Kerkez has made just 62 appearances.

How Liverpool feel about signing Antonee Robinson internally

TBR Football exclusively revealed that some people at Liverpool prefer Robinson to Kerkez.

Robinson, who Fulham value at £40 million is viewed by the Reds as the best left-back in the league while the latter is simply considered a player who could go very far in the future.

Considering the 27-year-old spent time in Merseyside playing for Everton as well is also a factor that appeals to Arne Slot’s side.
