Arsenal put on red alert as Leroy Sane makes significant transfer decision at Bayern Munich

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a summer move for Leroy Sane as he enters the final weeks of his contract at Bayern Munich.

The winger signed for Bayern from Manchester City in 2020 after a deal worth a reported £54.8million was agreed between the clubs.

Sane has since won four Bundesliga titles, the most recent of which came on Sunday when holders Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 at Freiburg.

He has hit 115 goal contributions in 218 appearances at Bayern, but looks set to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 29-year-old recently signed for football agency Gol International, led by Pini Zahavi, seemingly hinting at a summer transfer.

And European football expert Andy Brassell believes this could open up an opportunity for Arsenal to sign Sane.

Appearing on the Trans Europe Express on talkSPORT, Brassell spoke on Bayern’s reported interest in Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.

“It’s really interesting because it’s been widely assumed for a while that they wouldn’t be able to afford him this summer,” Brassell said.

“Because they’ve just spent a fortune reupping [Jamal] Musiala, reupping [Alphonso] Davies, reupping [Joshua] Kimmich, these are not cheap deals and it’s one of the reasons Thomas Muller is going.

“Now, it turns out Leroy Sane might leave as well. His agents had agreed a deal to extend his contract which expires at the end of this season, which would cut his wages in half and then a little bit more.

“So he’d go down from about €20million-a-year to €9m, wouldn’t get a signing-on fee, it was all globally agreed. And now, he’s changed agents to Pini Zahavi. You don’t change to Pini Zahavi if you’re happy with the offer, do you?

“So, whether that means that Sane will come back to the Premier League, which I think is not to be ruled out, we know Arsenal have an interest, which I think could be something really interesting to see actually.

“It’s all about creating space for Wirtz as well, when they talk about chopping old wages as well because you’re looking at paying well in excess of €125m for him, plus wages of maybe €20m-a-year.

“You’re looking at a package around about €300m I would say, if they can get Leverkusen to do the deal, he’s got two years left on his contract.

“So that is one that Bayern would be dipping into their special fund for. You could argue they should probably be spending it on defenders, but who can tell Bayern what to do?”

Sane joined Premier League giants City from Schalke 04 in 2016 and made 90 appearances in the top flight of English football.

He scored 25 goals and assisted another 30 for Pep Guardiola’s side, winning back-to-back league titles in 2018 and 2019.

The German international’s new agency already boasts some big-name players across European football as their clients.

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku and Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah are represented.

An Arsenal move for Sane wouldn’t come as a surprise given their past interest in the former City man.

It was reported last summer that the Gunners were keeping an eye on his contract talks at Bayern.

Sane has also previously worked with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta when he was assistant to Guardiola at City.

There is a chance that a new winger will join Arsenal this summer with Raheem Sterling returning to Chelsea after his loan spell.

Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard will be their remaining options once the transfer window opens.
