Chelsea got back on track on Sunday with a 3-1 win against Liverpool.
The Blues have had a strange season to say the least. Before Christmas, Chelsea looked like title contenders, while since the turn of the year, the west London side have been decidedly average.
Indeed, Cole Palmer has been out of form in recent months, and Chelsea’s results have seriously dipped.
Speaking on BBC 606, Chris Sutton has been discussing Enzo Maresca’s situation at Chelsea, and he says that he’s noticed that there’s a strange relationship between the manager and the fans at the moment.
Chris Sutton comments on Enzo Maresca and Chelsea fans
Sutton spoke about Maresca and his current situation at Chelsea.
The pundit says something doesn’t seem right with the Chelsea boss at the moment, claiming that there does seem to be a disconnect with supporters in some sort of way.
“And just something for Chelsea fans out there, there seems to me, Rob, to be a… I might be wrong, so let’s hear from Chelsea fans. A sort of strange relationship between Maresca and the fan base,” Sutton said to Robbie Savage.
“Something doesn’t quite seem right there. I mean, I think they’ll get a Champions League spot now. But Chelsea fans, tell us what’s wrong.”
How safe is Enzo Maresca’s job?
Maresca has done a decent job at Chelsea so far, and the Blues are currently on course to qualify for the Champions League next season.
However, that said, Chelsea have sacked managers before in these sorts of positions.
Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking last summer was shocking, while other managers such as Carlo Ancelotti were sacked after delivering good results.
As Sutton says, Maresca appears to have lost some sections of the fanbase, but, according to Fabrizio Romano, Maresca’s job is safe.
“He signed a long-term contract one year ago. I don’t have any kind of message about Chelsea looking to change the coach or going for another coach despite some questions I’m receiving from Chelsea fans,” Romano said.
“To change again would be really surprising and would be, in my opinion, really strange.”
Maresca will remain at Chelsea for the forseeable future, but he may need to work on mending his relationship with Chelsea fans if he’s to be a success at Stamford Bridge.
