Don’t worry Florian Wirtz is still option 1a, 1b, and 1c.
Once again, Bayern Munich will head into the summer transfer window as Bundesliga champions. Now that a sense of normalcy has been restored at Säbener Straße, Bayern will turn its focus to the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, hosted by the United States.
Some Bayern executives will stay back in Germany to work on improving the squad for a deeper run in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal. Bayern has made significant progress in its pursuit of Florian Wirtz and can now divert some auxiliary energy to other priorities.
Bayern beat reporters Vinzent Tschirpke and Philipp Kessler have reportedly identified the next position on the shopping list (via @iMiaSanMia).
Bayern’s second focus this summer after Florian Wirtz is on strengthening the backline. The club has renewed their interest in Jonathan Tah, who is viewed as a potential defensive leader. Meanwhile, Kō Itakura would be more of an option as a back-up. Max Eberl and his chief scout Nils Schmadtke have a good relationship with Gladbach.
Jonathan Tah has already confirmed he will leave Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer this summer and the interest with Bayern is mutual.
Kō Itakura is having one of the best seasons of his career at Gladbach. Itakura’s release clause is rumored to be €10-15 million, which would still be a good value acquisition for Bayern as Eric Dier’s replacement.
If Max Eberl can pull off one or both of these transactions, it would be a savvy roster building move that comes at a minimal cost.
