Enzo Maresca’s first season at Chelsea is coming to an end and while it has overall been a positive start to life at Stamford Bridge there are some glaring issues within his side.
One major problem is that Chelsea are struggling in front of goal in 2025, despite the recent 3-1 win over Liverpool bucking that trend somewhat.
It has been no secret that Enzo Maresca is after a centre forward, as Chelsea are heavily linked with Liam Delap.
Delap is not the only attacking signing Maresca wants though, with Chelsea also targeting Morgan Rogers after his sublime season at Aston Villa.
At the other end of the pitch is perhaps where the biggest problem is, but the availability of one specific World Cup winner may immediately fix that for Maresca.
Aston Villa open to offers on Emiliano Martinez
A big piece of transfer speculation sees Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on the market this summer, which is no doubt music to Maresca’s ears.
According to MailOnline, Villa are looking to bring in two goalkeepers this summer and are willing to listen to offers for the 32-year-old Argentinian.
Martinez lifted the World Cup with Argentina in 2022, having risen to prominence with a sensational performance for Arsenal against Chelsea in the 2020 FA Cup Final.
He then made the move to Villa, where he has been the number one ever since, as the club have gone from strength to strength, reaching the Champions League quarter-finals this season.
Chelsea have struggled to find their number-one goalkeeper thus far this season, with neither Robert Sanchez nor Filip Jorgensen standing out as the obvious first choice.
Chelsea are battling for Champions League football with Aston Villa, but despite this, Villa may have given Maresca the perfect opportunity to solve his goalkeeping issue.
How does Martinez solve Enzo Maresca’s problem?
Sanchez has been heavily criticised this season by fans and he was even dropped at one point for Jorgensen.
The clear difference between what Chelsea have and Martinez was made apparent earlier in the season at Villa Park when Cole Palmer was clear on goal and Martinez made a crucial save.
In the dying embers of the game, Marco Asensio shot tamely into the centre of the goal, which Jorgensen was only able to parry into the back of his net as Villa stole all three points.
Matches | Clean sheets | Goals conceded | Errors leading to goal | |
Robert Sanchez | 29 | 8 | 32 | 5 |
Filip Jorgensen | 6 | 0 | 9 | 1 |
Emiliano Martinez | 34 | 6 | 45 | 1 |
Djordje Petrovic | 29 | 10 | 33 | 0 |
That glaring error saw Sanchez return to the Chelsea net, but he has statistically been the worst goalkeeper in the league when it comes to errors leading to a goal.
Chelsea do have Djordje Petrovic on their books again next season after his heroics against Strasbourg, but the quality and experience that Martinez is able to offer may allow the Blues to send the Serbian on loan again or to learn from the Argentine.
Maresca will likely be addressing the goalkeeping area and with Villa willing to listen to offers for Martinez, the World Cup winner could end up at Stamford Bridge next season.
