The CanMNT star went down at just about the worst possible time.
Alphonso Davies opened up on his much-talked-about injury suffered on Canada men’s national team duty against the USMNT.
The Bayern Munich star, who recently signed an extension to stay in Bavaria, took to his Twitch channel to tell the tale.
“I got hit from the outside and my foot planted into the grass and I twisted it. I was like: damn, I was holding my knee in pain. My whole leg shut down and went numb, from my knee to my ankle,” Davies explained in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I was rolling around in pain. I tried to move my ankle and it was stiff, the ligament is gone, literally. But the adrenaline was pumping, I went back in and was feeling a bit better. I went back on the pitch. There was a long ball from a corner kick. I was lucky there was another defender behind me. Because if it was only me 1v1 with the striker, he’s winning that race. I couldn’t run, I couldn’t move. Mentally, I was like I’m going to catch this guy. But my body said: brother, you aren’t gonna do anything. I sat down and said: yeah I can’t do this anymore. I went off after 12 minutes.
“It’s very unfortunate, but that’s the game we signed up for. Injuries are part of the sport. If you’re someone who’s afraid of injuries, sports is not for you. I love the sport. That’s what comes with the game.”
Sounds like Davies is taking a healthy attitude towards it all — but Bayern, shortly eliminated afterwards without him in the Champions League, is still fuming with Canada Soccer about the situation. Stay tuned…
