Liverpool set to hand over $9M boost amid Jeremie Frimpong transfer clause

4 Min Read

Jeremie Frimpong looks as though he could be heading to Liverpool this summer – and the Reds could inadvertently provide a boost to one of his former clubs in the process.

Links with the Bayer Leverkusen star look to be growing stronger and stronger after the past couple of days. Talks are already said to have reached an advanced stage, while one report in Germany even suggests Frimpong is “on the verge” of completing a move to Anfield.

Liverpool.com has been aware of the Reds’ interest for some time, and now it seems the 24-year-old is also keen on a move to Merseyside, having already informed his current club that he wants to leave.

Frimpong has of course caught plenty of attention over the last couple of years with his performances for Xabi Alonso’s side, having made the move to Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021.

Before that, the right-back had been playing at Manchester City’s academy, having joined Liverpool’s Premier League rival as a nine-year-old despite originally choosing to play for the Reds.

Frimpong could now finally get the chance to pull on the iconic red shirt, although Liverpool will have to hand over a cash windfall to one of his former clubs as part of any deal – don’t worry, it’s not City.

Celtic inserted a clause in the deal that saw Frimpong move to Germany that would see the Glasgow club bank 30 per cent of the profit on any future transfer.

Frimpong was sold to Leverkusen for a fee of around $15 million, having joined Celtic for just $466,000.

Liverpool could now be set to meet the 24-year-old’s release clause which, according to Sky Sports, stands at around $39 million (€35M). That would see Leverkusen profiting around $24M, meaning Celtic would bank around $7.2M.

It looks as though the Scottish champion, and former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, can look forward to a cash injection, with Frimpong’s move to Anfield looking increasingly likely.

Arne Slot and Richard Hughes don’t look to be wasting any time in finding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s replacement, with the Reds’ current vice-captain having already made his decision to leave the club this summer, with a move to Real Madrid now surely just a matter of time.

What’s more, it appears that Frimpong is happy to make the move to Anfield, having already dropped hints that Liverpool would interest him.

Asked what he thought about joining the Reds by Ziggo Sport last year, Frimpong responded: “A great club, with history. That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring?”
