‘Wow’… Micah Richards left in shock after hearing about Liverpool’s plans to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold

4 Min Read

Liverpool have been in the headlines an awful lot this season, mainly thanks to Arne Slot, who has secured the Premier League trophy at the first time of asking.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to exit Liverpool and join Real Madrid has also put the Merseyside outfit in the spotlight, which has made it a rather interesting campaign for the Reds and their fans.

It’s evident that moves will have to be made by Slot and Richard Hughes in the summer if they want to try and win the top-flight title again next term, which is why things already seem to be in motion.

A plethora of players, such as Milos Kerkez and Rayan Ait-Nouri, have been linked with Liverpool; however, one name is seemingly refusing to go away.

Liverpool now ‘advancing in talks’ with Jeremie Frimpong

There are several reasons why Jeremie Frimpong’s potential move to Liverpool makes a lot of sense.

However, one of the key aspects behind the deal for Liverpool is the fact that the Netherlands international has a release clause worth around £29.5million.

While speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast, Gary Lineker shared Fabrizio Romano’s latest update on the Reds’ pursuit of the defender, which left Micah Richards somewhat taken aback.

“[The] latest news from a friend of the podcast, Fabrizio Romano [says that] Liverpool are advancing in talks to sign Jeremie Frimpong as right-back,” he said.

“Liverpool have already approached Bayer Leverkusen, discussing a £30 million release clause structure.”

To which Richards simply replied: “Wow,” with Alan Shearer also chipping in and saying that “it doesn’t surprise me.”

Frimpong is the perfect Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement at Liverpool

Over the last couple of seasons, Frimpong has been in some fine form.

The Dutchman has contributed to 17 goals this term and is arguably one of Bayer Leverkusen’s most important players.

And, when his numbers are compared with Alexander-Arnold’s, it’s evident how close they actually are when on the attack.

Season Games Goals Assists
Frimpong in 2024/25 48 5 12
Frimpong in 2023/24 47 14 12
Alexander-Arnold in 2024/25 43 4 8
Alexander-Arnold in 2023/24 37 3 11

Last term, the former Manchester City man helped carry the German outfit to their first piece of silverware in over 30 years.

Frimpong is equally as creative as Alexander-Arnold, and while there may be some questions about his defensive capabilities, his attacking prowess outweighs the cons in his defensive work.

Conor Bradley is another option for Slot, but if Frimpong does make the move to Anfield, it’ll certainly be an impressive start to the 2025/26 summer transfer window for the Reds.
