Liverpool trio get deserved nominations for Premier League Player of the Year award

4 Min Read

Three Liverpool players are among the eight nominations for the Premier League Player of the Year award following the Reds’ title win.

Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah have all been put forward for the award, with all three players enjoying stellar seasons as Arne Slot’s side romped to the title with four games to spare.

The Liverpool trio is joined on the shortlist by Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Nottingham Forest duo Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood, underlining just how far ahead the Reds have been of their rivals in the league this year.

Salah has already claimed the FWA Player of the Year award, and is still in the running for the Ballon d’Or, meaning he will likely be the favorite to also claim the Premier League’s crown.

He will face competition from two of his own teammates though, with Van Dijk and Gravenberch also enjoying superb campaigns in which they have been integral to Liverpool’s title triumph.

Salah’s incredible season has seen him score 28 goals and add 18 assists in 36 league games, putting him on course for the Golden Boot and Playmaker awards.

The Egyptian has already broken the record for most goal involvements in a Premier League season, and could still claim Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s record for the most assists in a campaign, with the pair still sitting top on 20.

Like Salah, Van Dijk has appeared in every league game this season, helping Liverpool to 14 clean sheets along the way as he has once again shown why he is considered to be one the best defenders in the world.

Both Salah and Van Dijk have given Liverpool a major boost ahead of the summer, with the pair having signed new two-year deals after months of speculation over their futures.

Gravenberch has also emerged as a vital member of Slot’s team this season. The former Ajax and Bayern Munich midfielder has started all but one of the Reds’ league games so far, having been a revelation in the No.6 role after Liverpool missed out on the signing of Martin Zubimendi last summer.

“He has all the ingredients to play really well in that position,” Slot said about Gravenberch recently.

“Perhaps what he could add to his game is maybe one or two touch play and find even more players in between the lines.

“He can take Virgil [van Dijk] as an example because for me he is our best player in that part, finding players in between the lines. But he’s done great, Ryan, that’s for sure.”
