Aston Villa Locked In A Three-Way Battle For This La Liga Defender: Should Emery Go For Him?

3 Min Read

In a recent report, Marca stated that Aston Villa are locked in a three-way battle for Valencia midfielder Cristhian Mosquera. It has been mentioned that the Villans would have to compete with Atletico Madrid and Villarreal in the race to sign the Spanish centre-back this summer.

Mosquera’s Impressive Rise In La Liga This Season

Mosquera is enjoying a solid campaign at the Spanish club as he has been responsible for producing a series of impressive performances for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The Alicante-born talent has participated in 38 matches for Valencia this season, scoring one goal in various competitions.

The 20-year-old has been a rock at the back based on his average of 1.4 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 3.4 clearances per game in La Liga. He has also been careful when distributing possession from inside his half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 91.6% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).

Mosquera’s current contract at Valencia will run out in the summer of 2026 which could open the door for the Villans to sign him on the cheap this off-season.

Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Go For Mosquera?

Mosquera is a good tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to earn the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the field. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can play his way out from the back.

Standing at 1.91m, Mosquera can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. However, only time will tell whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Villans manage to bring him on board in this summer transfer period.

We can expect Mosquera to add more bite and steel to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s defence. He is already good enough to challenge for regular first-team football at Villa Park next season.

At 20, Mosquera has the potential to be a world-class player in his position someday. Hence, the West Midlands club should focus on going for a player of his quality this summer. However, Emery needs to be patient with his development before he can unlock the best out of the gifted defender.
