Crystal Palace could now follow Arsenal in making unique stadium change after FA Cup win as odd tradition resurfaces

Crystal Palace have unlocked a number of benefits after winning the FA Cup.

Not only have the south Londoners now finally got a major trophy in their cabinet, but the 1-0 win over Manchester City has also seen Crystal Palace qualify for the UEFA Europa League, while also securing them £2m in prize money.

Interestingly, there is also a quirky English football tradition Crystal Palace are now entitled to get involved in after becoming the 45th club to win the FA Cup.

Crystal Palace can now get involved in the tradition of using triangular corner flags

While there is no official Football Association (FA) rule against the use of adopting triangular corner flags, it is something of an unwritten rule in English football that any side to have won the FA Cup can do so.

The interesting tradition – which talkSPORT and others have previously reported on – is believed to date back to 1927, when Cardiff City defeated Arsenal in the FA Cup final, and wanted to mark the achievement by using triangular corner flags.

Typically, clubs deploy the shape of a square for their corner flags.

Arsenal – who have won the FA Cup a record 14 times – participate in this tradition, while Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Preston North End and AFC Wimbledon do likewise.

Therefore, Crystal Palace fans may not only be seeing UEFA Europa League football at Selhurst Park for the first time next season, but also a change to the corner flags, which Manchester United target Jean-Philippe Mateta loves to kick after scoring.

Crystal Palace could soon win another trophy at Wembley

Just weeks after winning their first trophy, Crystal Palace – who Ruben Dias praised – could secure another in August with an FA Community Shield clash against Liverpool on the horizon.

The exact date is yet to be disclosed, although the 2024 FA Community Shield took place on 10th August, so fans can assume the tie will occur around this time.
