Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave his boyhood club, Liverpool, after 20 years certainly caused a mixed response.
Some supporters are upset he is leaving, booing the England international when he came on as a substitute against Arsenal last week. He is expected to join Champions League rivals Real Madrid, but Alexander-Arnold isn’t the only player who could be saying goodbye this summer when their contract expires.

Some players will negotiate a renewal or could see their club exercise an option to extend their terms, but for the rest, it will be pastures new next season.
The Athletic looks at each Premier League club and who could be on the move this summer…
Arsenal
Players out of contract: Jorginho, Thomas Partey
Mike Arteta’s squad could be set for a small overhaul in midfield this summer, with Jorginho and Partey coming to the end of their contracts.
Time is certainly up for Jorginho, but Arsenal have been holding talks with Partey without success.
As The Athletic has reported, he would be open to an improved two-year agreement or a one-year deal plus an option to extend by a further 12 months, but he will have other offers.

Aston Villa
Players out of contract: Kortney Hause, Robin Olsen
Hause hasn’t played a competitive game since a loan spell at Watford in 2022, with knee issues blighting his career. The central defender could do with a fresh start and better luck with injuries.
Swedish goalkeeper Olsen is also expected to leave.
Bournemouth
Player out of contract: Chris Mepham
Mepham is expected to make his loan move to Sunderland permanent this summer, especially if they win the Championship play-offs. His contract is set to expire, but Bournemouth could activate an option to extend.
Brentford
Players out of contract: Josh Dasilva, Ben Mee
Brentford could extend Dasilva’s contract for another 12 months after he signed a one-year deal with an option last summer.
Mee also signed a one-year extension in 2024, but the 35-year-old has made just two starts in the Premier League this season and on Sunday, it was confirmed he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Brighton and Hove Albion
Players out of contract: Tariq Lamptey, James Milner
Ghana international Lamptey looks certain to move on this summer. He has started 10 times in the Premier League this season — Fabian Hurzeler’s first-choice right-back is Joel Veltman, whose deal has recently been extended by a one-year option.
Milner has been struggling with a long-term hamstring injury, but Hurzeler has said he hopes the 39-year-old stays at the club. In what role remains to be seen.

Chelsea
Player out of contract: Lucas Bergstrom
The 22-year-old Finnish goalkeeper has yet to make a senior appearance for Chelsea, although he has been named on the bench for Conference League games this season.
The length of the contracts Chelsea have been dishing out in recent windows means most members of their squad have several years left on their deals.
Crystal Palace
Players out of contract: Nathaniel Clyne, Joel Ward, Remi Matthews
After nine seasons across two spells at Selhurst Park, Clyne is expected to move on. The 34-year-old defender made just five Premier League starts this season.
There will be another emotional goodbye for Ward, 35, after 13 seasons at the club, but backup goalkeeper Matthews, 31, is expected to sign a new contract.
Everton
Players out of contract: Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Michael Keane, Idrissa Gueye, Joao Virginia, Ashley Young, Seamus Coleman, Asmir Begovic, Mason Holgate, Neal Maupay
It will be a summer of change at Everton, and not just because of the club’s move to their new stadium. Ten players are out of contract this summer, including Coleman, who joined the club in 2009, and Calvert-Lewin.
David Moyes faces a huge summer of squad rebuilding before a new era begins for Everton. On Saturday, the manager confirmed Young, Begovic and Virginia would leave next month.
“We’ve seen what a great professional Young is and know the leadership qualities he has brought to the squad,” he told the club’s website. “Begovic and Virginia have also worked really hard and conducted themselves impeccably.”
Fulham
Players out of contract: Kenny Tete, Carlos Vinicius, Tom Cairney, Willian
There are some big decisions to be made. Club captain Cairney has been at Fulham for 10 seasons, but last week, the club took up options to extend the deals of Adama Traore, Harry Wilson and Raul Jimenez. Discussions on other contracts will take place after the season is finished.

Ipswich Town
Players out of contract: Axel Tuanzebe, Cameron Burgess, Massimo Luongo, Marcus Harness, Elkan Baggott
Kieran McKenna has said he is keen to extend Tuanzebe’s contract, but the confirmation of Ipswich’s relegation back to the Championship increases the likelihood of him receiving other offers. Central defender Burgess is in a similar position.
Ipswich have an option to extend Baggott and Harness’s contracts by another year.
Leicester City
Players out of contract: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ward, Daniel Iversen
Vardy has already announced he will leave the club this summer after 13 years of service and Leicester face an impossible task to replace him.
Ward has been at Leicester for seven seasons but has failed to establish himself as the long-term No 1, and has become a target for a section of the fanbase.
Iversen will have offers from Championship clubs after his excellent loan spell at Preston North End a couple of seasons ago.
Liverpool
Players out of contract: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harvey Davies
Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave has upset some Liverpool fans, who booed him whenever he touched the ball in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal, but he leaves as a Premier League champion who won almost every trophy available.
Fourth-choice goalkeeper Davies, 21, had a loan spell at Crewe Alexandra in 2023-24 and may want more senior football.
Manchester City
Players out of contract: Kevin De Bruyne, Scott Carson
De Bruyne’s announcement that he was leaving Manchester City after 10 seasons and six Premier League titles evoked a reaction closer to that of Vardy’s than Alexander-Arnold’s, but it remains to be seen where the 33-year-old lands next.
Carson has signed one-year extensions to keep him at Manchester City as a support goalkeeper for the past two seasons. Could the 39-year-old do so again?

Manchester United
Players out of contract: Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton
There is going to be a lot of change at Manchester United — there has to be after their poor showing in the Premier League this season. Lindelof looks set to depart and Eriksen has already said he expects to leave.
Evans signed a contract extension last summer, but he is 37 and has played just six times in the Premier League this season.
Newcastle United
Players out of contract: Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Mark Gillespie, John Ruddy
As The Athletic’s Newcastle writer Chris Waugh reported in February, there is an option for Newcastle to extend Wilson’s contract, but his injury record and high wages may dissuade them from doing so.
Lewis became the first British-born player to represent Sao Paulo in Brazil when he joined them on loan this season, and there is an option to make that deal permanent.
Nottingham Forest
Players out of contract: Harry Toffolo, Willy Boly, Wayne Hennessey
Left-back Toffolo had a one-year option activated last summer to keep him at the club, but he has made four Premier League appearances, totalling 135 minutes.
An option has been triggered in Ola Aina’s contract to keep him at Forest, but Boly’s future remains uncertain. He is 34 and has mostly been an unused substitute this season, so a fresh start may be on the cards.
Hennessey signed a short-term contract until the end of this season while he recovers from an Achilles heel injury.
Southampton
Players out of contract: Kyle Walker-Peters, Adam Lallana, Joe Lumley
Following relegation, Southampton seem resigned to losing Walker-Peters on a free transfer.
Lallana is 37 and has only featured in four Premier League games since the start of 2025 as he stepped into a player-assistant manager role. With the identity of the next Southampton manager unknown at this time, so is Lallana’s future coaching role at the club.
Lumley has signed back-to-back one-year contracts, but has only featured four times this season.

Tottenham Hotspur
Players out of contract: Sergio Reguilon, Fraser Forster, Alfie Whiteman, Ben Davies
Reguilon does not feature in Ange Postecoglou’s plans and seems certain to return to Spain this summer. Backup goalkeepers Forster, 37, and Whiteman, 26, also look set to leave.
However, Davies, 32, is expected to sign an extension.
West Ham United
Players out of contract: Danny Ings, Vladimir Coufal, Michail Antonio, Lukasz Fabianski, Aaron Cresswell, Kurt Zouma
It will be a new era at West Ham next season. Last week, the club confirmed Cresswell, Fabianski, Ings and Coufal will leave, and Zouma is expected to be released, too. The future of Antonio, who has returned to light training after breaking his leg in a car accident last December, is undecided.
Head coach Graham Potter is looking to overhaul his squad this summer, but has described Antonio’s situation as “unique” while the club support his recovery.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Players out of contract: Nelson Semedo, Pablo Sarabia, Craig Dawson
Wolves effectively let Dawson go after the January window but are still paying his contract until it expires.
Sarabia will almost certainly leave. He earns a weekly salary of over £100,000 ($133,000) but has only made six league starts this season.
Semedo’s case is different. He is also among Wolves’ highest-paid players but starts every week and has been captain since January. Wolves would love to keep him and talks have been held, but he will probably choose to move on.
