Fabrizio Romano shares what actually happened after Liverpool made contact to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle

Liverpool and Arsenal would both love to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United this summer.

The Sweden international has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season, and he played a huge part in helping the Magpies win the Carabao Cup.

Isak’s performances have helped the Toon to be in contention to qualify for the Champions League as well next season, which would be a massive boost for the club.

The flip side of the above is that Isak’s magnificent performances have attracted interest from the top two clubs in the Premier League right now – Liverpool and Arsenal.

What Newcastle told Liverpool after they made contact to sign Alexander Isak

Darwin Nunez is expected to leave Liverpool this summer.

The Uruguay international is the Reds’ record signing, but his time at Anfield has not been great at all. Arne Slot doesn’t seem to fancy him either – the striker has started just eight games in the Premier League all season.

If Nunez leaves, a replacement will be needed up top, and Liverpool would love to sign Isak before the start of next season.

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the Premier League champions even made contact to understand the terms of a deal, but they were met with a clear message from Newcastle.

The Magpies told Liverpool that their star striker will not be sold this summer.

Romano said in a video on his YouTube channel: “The message coming from Newcastle is very, very clear, especially in the case of Champions League football. That’s the hope and expectation of Newcastle.

“But just in general, the very clear idea of the owners, management and everyone at the club is that Alexander Isak will be a part of the Newcastle squad next season.

“He has been the desire of many clubs, for example Liverpool.

“Liverpool had some contacts in April-May to understand the situation of Alexander Isak. But, the message was very clear from Newcastle – they don’t want to sell the player.

“Same for Arsenal. He has always been the number one desire of Mikel Arteta. But, they understand that it’s probably not going to be possible this summer unless they do something completely crazy in terms of transfer fee and also the offer to the player.”

Liverpool have been watching another top striker

Isak would be the dream striker for Liverpool and rightly so.

The Swede is a complete centre-forward. He can run in behind as well as hold the ball up, and his ability to link play up with the players around him makes the whole attack better.

But, as things stand, Isak will not be leaving Newcastle.

Slot will still need a new striker, and TBR Football exclusively revealed in April that Liverpool scouts watched Benjamin Sesko live during RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga clash against Wolfsburg.

The Slovenia international is one of the best up-and-coming strikers in the world, and he would be a brilliant option for Liverpool this summer.
