Report: Arsenal have 25-goal striker on their shortlist, he’s set to be available on a free transfer this summer

Arsenal have a busy summer on the transfer front as they look to strengthen their ranks in pursuit of glory next year.

A new striker is high on Arsenal’s agenda this summer after calls throughout the season for the Gunners to bring in a new centre-forward.

For instance, Highbury legend Ian Wright claimed in January that signing a new striker would have been reassuring for Arsenal fans.

Jonathan David is one of the strikers Arsenal have been in contact with ahead of the transfer window, and now a report has emerged claiming how they feel about signing him.

Jonathan David on Arsenal shortlist but not a top target

Jonathan David is set to leave Lille as a free agent at the end of the season, something which has led to many of Europe’s top clubs monitoring him.

In terms of Arsenal’s interest in David, the 25-goal marksman is ‘on their shortlist, but not at the top of it’, according to The Athletic.

Arsenal’s interest in David is matched by Chelsea, who also have the Canada international on their shortlist not as a top target.

The report also spoke about West Ham’s interest in David, though they noted that the Hammers’ lack of Champions League football would make them a ‘trickier sell’ for the player.

However, David’s representatives held talks with West Ham’s hierarchy earlier this year and their interest dates back to January 2021, added the report.

Which strikers could Arsenal sign this summer?

There’s no doubt that Arsenal need a new centre-forward, a focal point in attack who could help break down stubborn defences and make a difference in big games.

Arsenal are reported to be leading the race for Viktor Gyokeres, while the likes of Alexander Isak, Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko have also been linked with the Gunners.

Arsenal also held talks with Hugo Ekitike at Eintracht Frankfurt following Andrea Berta’s arrival at the Emirates Stadium.

“When Berta came in, obviously they were looking at the (striker) situation,” TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey said about Arsenal’s striker search in April.

“And he (Ekitike) is one of the newer names on the list who’s been producing good reports along with the likes of Osimhen and Sesko.

“It wouldn’t shock me if Ekitike stayed for another season, but it depends on Premier League interest. Newcastle could go for him if they lose Isak.

“If you remember, Newcastle were the first Premier League club to move for Ekitike. Is he top of anyone’s list? He’s not top of Liverpool’s list, Arsenal like him a lot but he won’t be cheap.”
