Rumour now coming from Manchester United should make Arsenal desperate for Tottenham to win the Europa League – opinion

3 Min Read

Arsenal fans are presumably hoping to see Manchester United beat Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League final.

The Gunners and Spurs are bitter rivals, with many Tottenham supporters even keen to see their team lose against Manchester City at the end of last season, just so Arsenal would fail to win the Premier League – an outlook which memorably irked Ange Postecoglou.

However, despite the rivalry, there is one reason why Arsenal should be hoping for Tottenham to overcome Manchester United in Bilbao.

UEFA Europa League glory for Spurs would surely send Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal

A story from L’Equipe on Tuesday claimed that Manchester United will push to sign Viktor Gyokeres after the UEFA Europa League final – as Ruben Amorim targets a reunion with the Swede.

Arsenal have already bid for Gyokeres with talks ongoing, and at this moment in time, it very much feels like the Sporting CP No.9 will either move to Old Trafford or the Emirates Stadium, with Fabrizio Romano already confirming the striker will leave Lisbon this summer.

However, if Manchester United fail to beat Tottenham and end up with no European football to offer the Sweden international, it would put Arsenal firmly in the driving seat to secure his signature.

Of course, no Arsenal fan would enjoy seeing Spurs succeed, but if it means Gyokeres does end up in N5 – a prolific striker who boasts 96 goals in 101 games for Sporting CP – it would be a necessary evil.

What Viktor Gyokeres has already said about the situation

Gyokeres has already addressed his future in the media, remaining coy on the matter until the Taca de Portugal final against Benfica on Sunday is over.

The Sporting CP No.9 said: “My next club? We can’t predict the future. We never know what happens. I’m focused now on celebrating this title and trying to win the Taca de Portugal.”

Gyokeres was – however – in tears as he applauded fans inside the Jose Alvalade Stadium after the final home game of the 2024/25 campaign, which has been taken as a farewell by many.
