‘Across the industry’: David Ornstein shares what people in football are saying about Florian Wirtz after Liverpool links

Liverpool are just one of the leading clubs who have been linked with Florian Wirtz in recent weeks.

The Reds have enjoyed a superb season in the Premier League but they’ll be eager to compete on multiple fronts next term.

Liverpool are huge fans of Wirtz, who has developed into one of the world’s best young players at Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Bayern Munich are also in pursuit of Wirtz, while Manchester City were also credited with an interest in Wirtz.

David Ornstein has now shared what he’s been hearing from people within the football industry about Wirtz’s future amid links with Liverpool and others.

Some think Florian Wirtz will go to Liverpool but ‘many’ reckon Bayern Munich are in pole position

David Ornstein hosted his latest transfer Q&A session on The Athletic on Thursday, and a fan asked him about the latest involving Florian Wirtz.

The transfer insider revealed that “many you speak to across the industry” think Bayern are in the driving seat – but there are conflicting opinions.

“Clearly Liverpool are very interested, hence contacting his representatives to express that (like we reported),” replied Ornstein.

“As you will have seen, word from the Etihad Stadium is that Manchester City are no longer in contention, citing the overall cost of any deal.

“No such word has emerged from Anfield to date and, given the unique nature of the player they’ll want to be in the mix if there is a chance to get him.

Many you speak to across the industry think Bayern remain in the driving seat, others reckon he’ll go to Liverpool and some say he’ll stay at Leverkusen.

“This indicates a lack of clarity at present and that all parties are awaiting his decision.”

The ace up Liverpool’s sleeve that could help them sign Florian Wirtz

Although the race for Wirtz is expected to be highly competitive, Liverpool may well have a slight advantage due to another signing they’re set to make.

Liverpool are close to signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, who could help to lure the German wonderkid to Anfield.

The human factor cannot be understated when it comes to players making moves.

There could always be that element of anxiety about moving to a new country away from the main support group.

However, should Liverpool sign Frimpong, then Wirtz would be able to follow him at Anfield and have someone he knows well support him, and vice versa.

In addition, TBR Football were previously informed that Liverpool believe keeping the likes of Mohamed Salah could potentially play a part in attracting further top players this summer.

The pull factor of having players like Van Dijk and Salah cannot be understated, with targets potentially tempted by the opportunity of playing alongside two of the greatest players in the game.
