Can the big man push FC Augsburg to greater heights?

According to a report from Fussball Transfer journalist Dominik Schneider, former Bayern Munich striker and German national team assistant coach Sandro Wagner is set to fulfill a dream by become a Bundesliga head coach.

Per the report, Wagner will get that opportunity at FC Augsburg:

A few days ago, the name Sandro Wagner dominated the headlines. Julian Nagelsmann’s assistant at the German Football Association (DFB) announced that he was leaving his position. His goal: to become a Bundesliga coach. And now it’s clear that the 37-year-old is fulfilling his dream.

According to FT information, what had been rumored in the media has long been confirmed. Sandro Wagner will be the new coach of FC Augsburg . The relevant documents have already been signed, and the agreement was reached a few days ago. The FCA is expected to announce its decision by the end of this week.

FC Augsburg did not have a great season, but it was not a mess, either. Regardless, the winds of change might be blowing for FC Augsburg per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg:

Internal analysis is still ongoing at FC Augsburg. It is possible that the club may part ways with both head coach Jess Thorup and sporting director Marinko Jurendic.

There is internal dissatisfaction with the team’s sporting development in recent weeks. Additionally, there is currently no consensus regarding future strategic squad planning, including transfers and overall squad structure.

A final decision – particularly concerning Marinko Jurendic – is expected on Friday.

⏳ In the event of a dismissal of Jess Thorup, Sandro #Wagner is FC Augsburg’s top candidate to take over as head coach!

However, as of Thursday evening, Wagner has not yet given the club a final commitment and has definitely not signed a contract. Additionally, Thorup remains in charge for the time being.

Wagner was also a top candidate for TSG Hoffenheim for the summer, but he turned the club down. Now Augsburg want him. A decision is expected soon.

There will be a decent base for Wagner to work with, but the Bundesliga will be challenging in 2025/26.

If this move goes through, Wagner will have to be ready.
