One of Newcastle United’s top targets from 2022 is now flying in the Bundesliga and is currently being valued by his club at around £66 million.

The striker is currently enjoying his best goal scoring season to date and is heavily wanted around Europe with his club accepting he will likely leave.

Liverpool have been impressed by his performances this campaign and he is a player who Arne Slot’s team have been linked with a summer transfer.

Newcastle United won’t be overly concerned at having missed out on him with Alexander Isak at the club, however, the Magpies came close to landing him for under half his latest valuation.

The 22-year-old is now a wanted man around Europe with Arsenal and Liverpool having both been linked with the youngster.

Liverpool have been impressed with Ekitike’s performances and the Frenchman could become a target for the Reds in the summer should Darwin Nunez leave.

Things didn’t quite work out for the striker at PSG, however, he is quickly establishing himself as one of Europe’s top strikers.

Newcastle came close to signing Hugo Ekitike in 2022

Newcastle came close to signing Hugo Ekitike for £30m in 2022 but the deal never went through and the player ended up joining Paris Saint-Germain.

Back in 2022, after signing for PSG, Ekitike revealed he was close to joining Newcastle: “I’m not setting aside everything Newcastle did for me to come. If I had to go abroad, I would have gone there.

“But, when PSG wants you and you’re French, you can’t refuse. All those who positioned themselves were big clubs.”

Ekitike could have proven to be the perfect alternative to Isak and a solid upgrade on Callum Wilson.
