Chelsea legend Didier Drogba once named the two toughest centre-backs he ever faced in the PL

In total, Didier Drogba played 254 games in the Premier League for Chelsea scoring 104 goals and providing 56 assists.

Those goals yielded four Premier League winners medals for Drogba at Chelsea, one of the best strikers who has ever worn blue at Stamford Bridge.

In terms of who the striker enjoyed playing against the most in England, Drogba scored eight league goals against London rivals Arsenal as well as West Bromwich Albion.

And interestingly, the only teams who were able to stop the Ivory Coast international from scoring against them were sides you’d usually be used to seeing as Premier League minnows.

Southampton 3 0
Burnley 3 0
Queens Park Rangers 3 0
Blackpool 2 0
Sheffield United 2 0
Derby County 1 0
The only Premier League sides Didier Drogba failed to score against.

Didier Drogba hated playing against Manchester United defenders the most

That being said, Drogba spoke to Rio Ferdinand in an interview for TNT Sports back in 2015 and revealed which defender he found it most difficult to play against in his career.

The former Chelsea striker named three players: Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Barcelona’s Carlos Puyol, who he would have faced in the Champions League.

Speaking to Ferdinand, Drogba said: “I’ve always said, you and Vidic, people say that I scored a few goals against Man U, I would say when I was scoring against Man U I was really happy because I didn’t score much.

“So for me to score against you guys, means that I had a good game. So you two and Carlos Puyol.

“Because he’s tough, he’s a very good defender but he’s a gentleman.”

Ferdinand asked: “So you preferred to play against the guys you could bully or the guys you could kind of, feel fear sometimes?

“Because you’re a big guy, and everyone knew about you being strong, liked contact, did you feel in the tunnel sometimes – I’m going to play against this guy and he looks scared.”

Drogba: “The thing is, I had to adapt to this game, but this wasn’t my game when I was in France, I was always on the limit of offside, running behind.

“When I came to Chelsea I became like a target man, you know linking the game with Frank [Lampard] and Arjen Robben.

“So I had to change my game to adapt to them.”

Why did Didier Drogba leave Chelsea?

As well as being known for his goals at Chelsea, Drogba was also famous for his fiery competitiveness on the pitch, a striker who left it all out there.

In fact John Obi Mikel recently named one Chelsea manager Drogba wanted sacked, someone the striker wasn’t too keen on.

But in terms of why Drogba left Chelsea for Shanghai Shenhua back in 2012, it simply seemed as if the striker wanted to leave on a high note.

Drogba had just starred in a famous Champions League win over Bayern Munich, and 34-years-old, it was seemingly time for a new challenge.

The Ivory Coast joined former teammate Nicolas Anelka in China, before Drogba then actually ended up returning to the club for a brief spell in 2014.
