Micah Richards says £13m Newcastle player’s performance v Liverpool is actually one of the best he’s ever seen

Newcastle United gave their fans a day to remember for the rest of their lives by beating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak’s goals were of the highest order as Newcastle bounced back from their defeat in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United in 2023 with a historic win.

Eddie Howe would have been immensely proud of his players, not solely due to the result but also due to their lionhearted performances at Wembley Stadium.

Burn, who Alexander Isak lauded against Liverpool won the Alan Hardaker Trophy and deservedly so for a truly special display at centre-back — initially making the Reds pay by tasking Alexis Mac Allister to mark him for a corner by scoring an incredible header.

Commenting on his goal against Liverpool, Burn admitted to capitalising on Mac Allister’s marking as he rose like salmon and drew first blood on the day.

Micah Richards hails Dan Burn after Newcastle beat Liverpool

Being a boyhood Newcastle fan, Dan Burn would have been desperate to get his hands on the Carabao Cup trophy by defeating Liverpool.

The Englishman summed up the Magpies’ unbridled desire to make history on Sunday by winning headers galore, crunching into challenges and making himself a nuisance in both boxes.

On the day, Newcastle needed performances from the ages to overcome a world-class Liverpool side and the £13 million (Sky Sports) man certainly embraced the sizable task at hand.

Reviewing Newcastle’s triumph against Liverpool, Micah Richards claimed Burn’s display is one of the best he has ever seen from a centre-back.

Richards said on The Rest Is Football podcast: “We’ll start with big Dan Burn. The fact that last season, he played a lot at full-back and then obviously, they’ve had injuries to [Sven] Botman and then he moves across into centre-back. That’s one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. And people will say you’re getting overexcited.”

“I’m really not because a lot of people said he’s not good enough for Newcastle, he’s one that they should get rid of but to have that mentality to go into that game against Liverpool but just he won absolutely everything! He was on the front foot, he knew when to drop off and his goal was just remarkable.”

The 32-year-old must be flattered to say the least that his dominant display has earned such rave reviews.

Whether one agrees with Micah Richards’ bold claim or not, where one cannot disagree with the pundit is that Burn was spectacular against Liverpool and the numbers prove that to be the case.

Winning seven out of nine duels, not being dribbled past at all, making 11 clearances, winning seven out of nine duels and scoring the opener, the former Brighton centre-back was truly outstanding.

Burn’s latest heroics will be etched in the memory of every Newcastle fan as he truly bossed proceedings in one of the biggest games in the club’s history.
