Micah Richards has been naming who he believes to be the best goalscorers in Champions League history.
Of course, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the two greatest attacking forces in the history of the competition, but picking a top 10 and putting them in order isn’t an easy task.
However, speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Micah Richards was tasked with doing just that.
The pundit put together his top 10 list, and he made a very interesting claim about Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
Indeed, Richards put Salah as the sixth-best attacker in Champions League history, ahead of some massive names.
Mohamed Salah picked ahead of Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe
Richards picked Salah ahead of the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Thierry Henry.
The pundit says that Salah is a top player now, and noted that his goal record in Europe is better than Henry’s.
Salah has been in Ballon d’Or winning form as of late, and Richards isn’t the only pundit to hail the Egyptian in recent times.
“Number 10, Mbappe, number nine Shevchenko, number eight, Van Nistelrooy, Number seven, Thierry Henry, number six, Mohamed Salah,” Richards said.
“You’ve put Salah ahead of Henry?” Richards was asked.
“Yeah, his goals per game is 0.5, Thierry’s is only 0.46 in the Champions League. Some of us have done our research here,” Richards said.
“He’s top, he’s top now. I think he’s gone above Henry in terms of Premier League goals now.”
Mohamed Salah Champions League record compared to Thierry Henry
Thierry Henry is an all-time great striker, but there is an argument to be made that Salah has surpassed him now.
Indeed, especially in the Champions League, Salah does have the stats to back up his argument.
Thierry Henry | Mohamed Salah | |
---|---|---|
112 | Games | 88 |
50 | Goals | 47 |
23 | Assists | 17 |
0.45 | Goals per game | 0.53 |
0.21 | Assists per game | 0.19 |
1 | Champions League wins | 1 |
0 | Goals in Champions League finals | 1 |
Salah is a shoo-in for the Player of the Year award in the Premier League this year, and Liverpool simply have to find a way to resolve his contract situation.
Salah’s contract talks are going well at the moment, but Liverpool need to accelerate this and get a new deal done, because, at the moment, they’re running the risk of losing the very best player in the world.
Richards himself never actually played against Salah – although they were teammates at Fiorentina.
However, Richards did play against Henry, and he has something of a surprising record against the Frenchman.
Thierry Henry record vs Micah Richards | |
---|---|
Games | 3 |
Goals | 0 |
Assists | 0 |
Henry and Richards are currently co-hosts on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage, and after this claim, an uncomfortable conversation may be awaiting the pundit.
