This was an exciting week for Bayern football…and Bayern II played as well.
Welcome to the FC Bayern Campus Round Up, where the matches of Bayern Munich’s U-17, U-19 and U-23 squads are recapped, line ups are provided and the highlights to each match are hyperlinked on top of their respective score lines. Information on the matches is provided by the official FCBayern website here and here. Additionally, none of these matches can be viewed in full length without an FCBayernTV subscription. Without further ado, here is the round up:
Bayern II 1-1 SpVgg Hankofen-Hailing
Bayern lineup: Schmitt – Dalpiaz, Denk, Marušić, Yanda – Rüger (62. Dell’Erba), Chávez (72. Wagner), Della Rovere – Binder (62. Becker), Unsöld (72. Demircan), Jensen
Unused subs: Pavlešić – Scholze, Brückner, Darboe.
Goals: 1:0 Unsöld (22.), 1:1 Wagner (90.+6)
Let us start with the disappointment of the week. Bayern Munich hosted SpVgg Hankofen-Hailing, a team that was in 16th place in the league and had lost the last 3 games on the bounce. Jonah Kusi-Asare was with the senior team, so Samuel Unsöld started. The new Bayern II players Julien Yanda, Felipe Chávez and Tim Binder all started and got another chance to build chemistry with the team, with the Peruvian Chávez in particular impressing more and more the more game time he gets. Right back Max Scholze also made his return to the matchday squad after sitting out for 2 months due to a collarbone injury.
On to the game itself…it was not even that bad of a performance. The team controlled the ball well throughout the match, generally controlled the game and created the better chances. But, as per usual, the team proved to be impotent in front of goal and far too susceptible on the counter. A team that has creative players such as Guido Della Rovere and Jonathan Asp Jensen should not be struggling to carve out chances, but somehow the team looks so blunt every match. The goal came from a solo action from Asp Jensen that resulted in an accidental backheel that Unsöld managed to get on the end of before finishing past the goalkeeper. The visitors equalized with the last kick of the match by launching a deep free kick forward, winning three challenges against a lethargic Bayern defense and then shoving the ball in at the back post. Truly dreadful stuff. Bayern will need to ask themselves if these continued lethargic performances are good enough.
This draw at least helps Bayern break the 4 game losing streak the team had started 2025 with, but it still leaves the Bavarians now down in 4th, 10 points off of 1st place with 8 games to go. Title hopes and subsequent promotion are very, very distant now. The team will look to rebound against Buchbach on Friday, April 4.
Bayern Munich U-19 3-1 Heidenheim U-19
Bayern lineup: Klanac – Schubauer (90. Puljić), Mijatović, Schäfer, Ofli – Santos (64. Durakov), Nasrawe (78. Zöls), Richter – Karl (90. Paylan), Codjo-Evora (90. Uhuns), Sadat (78. Wilson)
Goals: 1:0 Karl (5)., 1:1 Windsheimer (29.), 2:1 Karl (80.), 3:1 Durakov (90.+3)
Bayern’s U-19s took an unbelievably important step towards progression to the next round of the U-19 league phase with this 3-1 win over Heidenheim’s U-19s. But, despite this big result, the talk of the town was Bayern wonderkid Lennart Karl and it is not hard to see why. Do yourself a favor and watch the highlights to the match. Karl’s opener in the 5th minute is an incredible solo goal that saw him glide past 3 opponents with impeccable close control and speed before finishing from an unbelievable angle. His second goal, too, despite being a penalty, was confidently blasted into the top corner by a teenager who knows the sky is the limit for him. The right winger is still young, raw and needs to grow, of course. Karl’s pressing is really quite bad, he can disappear at times in a match and he can be somewhat petulant. Even in this match, he lost the ball cheaply plenty of times. But the quality he has and the future he can have, if he keeps his feet on the ground, is undeniably jaw dropping.
There was other good news in the match, as well. David Santos and Noah Codjo-Evora made their full comebacks after injury in this match. Even Oluwaseyi Wilson finally made his return. Wilson has been out since November of last year, an absence that has spanned nearly 5 entire months. Welcome back.
As for the match itself, it was another up-and-down performance that bared familiar flaws. After a phenomenal 15 minutes, Bayern fell into a familiar pattern of slow build up play that rarely bypasses the first phase of the press, being pushed back and then losing the ball in the defensive third. This happened more and more after the 15 minute mark, which transformed a match Bayern were dominating into one that saw Heidenheim create all the chances. The equalizer was deserved. As was the winner for Bayern, however. But the team needs to get more variable if they want to end the season U-19 league champions.
However, this win did take Bayern a significant step close to being league champions. Remember, Bayern are in a 6 team group, in which the top 4 qualify for the next round. With this victory, Bayern move to 3rd in the table with 12 points from 7 games, while Heidenheim slip to 5th in the table with 7 points from 8 games. Given Heidenheim only have 2 more games and 6 more points to gain, it seems Bayern’s progression to next round is all but secure.
Mainz 05 U-17 4-5 Bayern Munich U-17
Bayern lineup: Kösters – Wijks, Kiala, Pavlić, Ajayi (71. El-Chaar) – Göttlicher, Lambe, Schmid (71. Matosevic) – Hentcho Nseke (83. Egwuatu), Gashi, Snip (57. Danioko).
Goals: 0:1 Gashi (33.), 0-2 Lambe (36.), 1-2 Debrah (43.) 2-2 Schreiber (45.), 2-3 Gashi (46.) 3-3 Schreiber (75.), 3-4 Hentcho Nseke (83.), 4-4 Rosenberger (85.), 4-5 Gashi (90+3.)
Wow. This game truly had it all. Nine goals, three equalizer, two goals in quick succession just before halftime, a goal straight after halftime, 4 goals past the 75th minute, an injury time winner (through the rebound of a missed penalty, no less) and a Yil Gashi hat trick to boot.
This victory sees Bayern’s U-17s go top of the six man group they are in (who are competing in the same format the U-19s are) with 15 points from 6 games. Given the team has an 11 point lead of 5th place with 4 games to go, qualification is virtually in the bag for the U-17s as well.
The most significant scoreline of the weekend is yet to come, however. The U-13s delivered a true masterclass against their city rivals, as can be seen below:
TSV 1860 Munich U-13 1-9 Bayern Munich U-13
It’s not every day you travel to your city rivals and thump them with a phenomenal 9-1 victory. Remember, people, Munich is red.
